Jared shrugs. “Not a clue. I doubt we’ll ever know. Doesn’t matter anymore anyway, does it?”
“Nah, guess not. Alright, well, let’s take that with us. Put it in the evidence room at the station and see if anything else ever comes to light. In the meantime, I have a date to get to. Big night for Delaney and me.” I grin at him, slapping him on the shoulder.
I pull up to Delaney’s house just as the movers I hired finish unloading my shit. After everything went down, my girl needed a little more time to get over learning she was in love with a serial killer. I postponed moving in with her but really she forgave me after about a week. I grin. After tonight, I’ll have a ring on Delaney’s finger, and we’ll finally get our happy ending. I sound sappy as fuck, but I don’t even care right now. Nothing else matters to me than finally having my girl.
“Dels?” I shout as I shut the door behind me after I pay the movers.
She doesn’t respond, so I go looking for her, and finally find her in the bedroom, putting away my clothes in a dresser.
“Oh.” She gasps, a hand going to her chest. “You startled me.”
I smirk. “Sorry, baby. I called out to you, but you didn’t answer.”
“I’m almost done. The second I saw the clothes, I went to work. The guys you hired did everything else, but I didn’t think you’d want them touching your underwear.”
Barking out a laugh, I hold my hand out to her, waiting for her to come to me. “Got something to ask you, gorgeous.”
She comes to me, her hands going into mine and she stares up at me, as if I’m a dream come true. Fucking slays me, every time when she looks at me like that. But I love it.
“What it is?” she asks, biting her lip nervously.
Letting go of one hand, I slip it into my pocket and pull out the ring I bought for her. “You gonna marry me this Saturday?”
“Oh Pike. Yes. Yes, of course.” She beams at me with tears shining in her eyes as I slip the ring over her finger. “But Saturday? You said I had three months to plan. Are you crazy? Wait. Don’t answer that.” She smiles. “I have a surprise for you, too.” She gives me a quick, hard kiss, and before I can react to keep her with me, she takes off to her bathroom and comes back with a white stick and hands it to me.
Confused, I take the plastic stick and study it. Holy fuck. “We’re having a baby?”
Tears fill her eyes, and she smiles so brightly, I’m about to cry my damned self, and nods.
“Fucking love you.” I toss the stick, pull her close, and kiss the fuck out of my almost wife.
Epilogue
I glance at the headline of the newspaper Pike is reading as I finish frying his eggs.
Two more slain by what our sources are calling the Valentine Killer.
I frown and put a hand to my protruding baby bump. He promised me after we were married there’d be no more murders.
He peeks over the paper at me. “What’s with that long face?”
“You promised.”
His brow shoots up. “Beautiful, I’m not a mind reader.”
I motion my spatula toward his newspaper.
He folds the paper back up, flipping to the front. “You think this was me?”
I shrug. Disappointment fills me.
“This wasn’t me.”
“Then who is it?”
“I don’t know. My days of killing and working at the force are done.”
I purse my lips, wanting to believe him. After the truth came out, I was shocked, but he has been doing what he promised and working doing construction with his dad since he quit the force.
