Zina at the table.
My mother.
Quiet. Contained. Handwritten notes in front of her — three pages of ink on paper that bypasses every digital system in this penthouse. The Queen’s intelligence network enters the family’s operational stream through the only medium she’s ever trusted. Her handwriting is precise. Small. The letters of a woman who spent years on a coastline teaching a boy to read absence while the world assumed she was dead.
She hasn’t looked at me yet. She doesn’t need to. I feel her awareness the way I’ve always felt it — not as warmth, not as pressure. As frequency. The steady, patient signal of a woman who positioned her pawn before anyone knew the game had started.
And Nova.
Thirty-two weeks. Enormous. The notepad in front of her — seven circles drawn in blue ink, five filled, two empty. The grocery pen beside it like a sentry. Her hand drifts to her belly. Stays. Moves back to the counter. Drifts again.
The contractions haven’t stopped.
I’ve been counting. Not because anyone asked me to — because I count everything nobody asks me to count. Fourteen minutes apart yesterday morning. Eleven minutes apart last night. Nine minutes apart since she walked into this kitchen forty minutes ago.
She’s not in labor. Not yet. But her body is rehearsing with a commitment that no longer feels like practice.
Romeo’s jaw is locked so tight I can see the tendon jumping beneath his skin. His eyes track from the laptop screen to Nova’s belly, and back to the screen in a cycle so fast most people would miss it. I don’t miss it. The man is running a war and monitoring his wife’s breathing simultaneously, and the dual focus is costing him something visible — the lines around his eyes deeper than they were this morning, the skin beneath them carrying the bruise of a man who hasn’t slept more than three hours in two days.
“Fabio.” Romeo’s voice. Low. Even. The open-door leader who doesn’t lock rooms or filter information. “Perimeter status.”
“Rebuilt.” Fabio’s response is clipped. Professional. The voice of a man reclaiming the competence that Costa’s betrayal made him doubt. “New rotation. Four-hour shifts. Nobody from the old grid. Every man vetted through channels Costa never touched.”
“Zina.”
My mother lifts her head. Her dark eyes meet Romeo’s green ones across the counter. The Queen and the King who inherited her throne. The woman who gave up her sons to protect them, meeting the son who opened every door she sealed.
She slides three pages across the marble.
“Marchese-adjacent movements in the financial corridor.” Her voice is even. Quiet. The register I grew up hearing through walls and across sand-drawn chessboards. “Two accounts activated forty-eight hours ago. Routing patterns consistent with Giovanni’s secondary architecture.”
Romeo picks up the pages. Reads. His expression doesn’t change, but his breathing does — one shallow inhale that tells me the information is worse than he expected and better than he feared.
Nova’s hand goes to her belly again. Holds. Her eyes are on Romeo. Steady. The ground watching the man she holds upright, calculating whether today is the day the weight exceeds what two people can carry.
Nine minutes.
I counted.
The room is full. Every piece on the board. Every frequency running. The overhead light catches the Patek Philippe on Romeo’s wrist — Giovanni’s rhythm, the dead King’s metronome, still ticking against the skin of a son who no longer flinches at its weight.
Seventy-two hours.
The clock doesn’t care whether we’re ready.
None of them are looking at me.
Good.
The Gauntlet Revealed
I stand.
The chair scrapes against tile, and every head turns. Nine sets of eyes hit me at once — the invisible boy stepping into the center of a room that has never once asked him to speak first.
Fuck it. The margin is gone.
“Node 7 isn’t a weapon.” My voice comes out in my mother’s register. Direct. Stripped. The truth delivered without the charm Romeo layers over hard information or the blade Santino presses underneath it. “The Shadow Network was never pointed at us. It was never pointed at anyone.”
