The Scrooge Effect

What the hell? Was he watching my every move? “I just fucking wrapped my hands.” As soon as I said it, I held up my hands, looking for the camera. “Sorry, alright? Geez!”

I knew there were cameras all over the building. I just hadn’t realized that Cash brought them up to spy on us any time he wanted.

As soon as I shoved through the doors to the hallway, Brock was waiting for me, shoving a comb through his hair as he laughed. “Caught ya again.”

“What?”

“You’re busted. We all know it. So, what did you do this time?”

I kept walking, ignoring my teammate.

“Oh, come on. You can tell me. I’ve been there before. Wren told on me last week because I said I had training at eight o’clock at night.”

I shot him a look over my shoulder. “Well, that was stupid. She knows we don’t have training at night.”

“I told her it was an emergency.”

A snort slipped free at my stupid friend’s words. “It was an emergency, but you didn’t go out of town?”

“Hey, I needed a break. You have no idea what it’s like in that house.”

“I think I have an idea. I have kids, remember?”

“Yeah, but you don’t have a woman who has more hair products than you.”

“And that’s a hardship, is it?”

“Listen,” he said, grabbing my arm and pulling me to a stop. “You don’t get it. I walk into the bathroom and her stuff is everywhere. And while I keep mine organized, her stuff is sprawled all over the place, taking up all the counter space. And, and! She uses Q-tips to make her eyeliner just perfect, and then she leaves them on the counter!”

“Why does she do that?”

“Because she’s a woman! I can’t take it. I mean, seriously, when I went into this relationship, I knew her products rivaled mine, but this is getting out of control. I at least have a regimen I follow. She keeps ordering the latest face wash or shampoo that’s supposed to give her super full hair. And the stack in the shower is growing to the point where I had to add more baskets just to fit all her stuff. I mean, I only have one basket!”

“Yeah, that’s amazing.”

“I know, right?”

“Yeah, I mean, I thought you would be the one with more stuff,” I chuckled.

“Hey, I might have a lot of products, but I don’t just go out and buy stuff willy-nilly.”

“Of course not. Especially if you want to use words like willy-nilly.”

Slapping him on the shoulder, I walked away, laughing to myself as he shouted curses at me. But as I headed for the office, I wondered what Harper could be so worked up over that she called my boss on me.

I was prepared to fight my corner, but when I walked into the office, it was just Cash.

“Where’s Harper?”

“Huh?” he asked, looking up from his paperwork. “Oh, that. Yeah, I just said that to get you up here.”

Rolling my eyes, I took a seat, but deep down I was relieved. “You know, you could have just said you needed to see me.”

“Right, because you were so willing to come here.”

“Look, it’s nothing personal, boss. It’s just…you know, you’re singling me out.”

“Because we need to talk about your father.”
