Danny slid into a chair and laid her documents on the table, smoothing out the crumpled paper as her cheeks heated.
“Jacques gave me the gist of your story.” He nodded but didn’t try to touch her. “I’m sorry it happened to you. We’re going to do our best to help you identify the man who did this to you.”
Her cheeks heating, she slid the documents she had across the table toward Remy. “I have the medical record from after the incident and a tentative timeline. It’s not much, but it’s all I could come up with.”
Remy took the documents. “If it’s all right with you, I’m going to scan them and send them to Swede, our computer guy, and bring him into the meeting.”
“Do what you need to do,” she said and laid her hands in her lap.
When Remy crossed to the array of monitors and computers, she glanced at Jacques. “Thanks for helping.”
Jacques sat beside her. “I know this can’t be easy, but you can trust Remy and Swede.”
Her lips twitched. “Are they also some of the good guys?”
He grinned. “They are.”
The large display screen blinked to life, and a man’s face appeared…strong jaw, white-blond hair and piercing blue eyes.
“Danny, this is Navy SEAL Axel Svensen,” Jacques said, “otherwise known as Swede.” He turned to the monitor. “Swede, this is Danny French, Army Ranger.”
“Former,” Danny corrected.
“You survived training,” Swede said. “Once a Ranger, always a Ranger. Nice to meet you, Ms. French.”
“Danny,” she said.
“Remy and Jacques briefed me on your situation. I’ll do what I can by digging into the data, assignments and checking for other incidents that might have been reported around Fort Benning.”
Remy returned the papers to Danny and sat across the table from her. “Jacques asked Swede to look into Dale Pruitt and the men who arrived yesterday.”
Danny nodded. “Because of the drug, my memories are so hazy, I can’t recall the face of the man who...of the man.” She twisted her hands together in her lap. “I can only remember the sound of his voice.”
“He threatened your brother if you told anyone,” Remy said.
Again, Danny nodded. “My brother was moving up as a warrant officer. I was just starting my career. I couldn’t let the man ruin Caleb’s chances, especially since I couldn’t remember the man’s face. I couldn’t go around accusing anyone when I wasn’t sure who it might be.”
“Why did you leave the military?” Remy asked.
She met Remy’s gaze. “I had a gap in my memory I couldn’t overcome. I didn’t know who’d done it. I couldn’t be sure he wouldn’t do it again. It could’ve been anyone. Do you know what it’s like to walk among men, never knowing if any one of them might have attacked you? Men who are bigger and stronger than you are? Fort Benning was full of them. I couldn’t go anywhere without constantly looking over my shoulder.”
Remy held her gaze. “You were in a war zone.”
Danny nodded. “I couldn’t stay, not knowing what might happen next.”
“Why pursue it now?” Remy asked.
“Besides the fact that the threat to my brother will be over when he retires, I can’t get past the guilt I carry for the other women he might’ve assaulted since.” She looked from Remy toward Jacques. “If there’s anything that could trigger my memory, or any clue you can uncover to identify him, I want him caught before he hurts anyone else.”
Remy nodded. “We’ll do the best we can.”
“That’s where I come in,” Swede said. “My research on Dale Pruitt confirmed he was assigned to Fort Benning at the same time as you, and he was the duty NCO the night you were attacked. Assignment to a facility and a duty doesn’t verify movement.”
Danny looked down at her hands. “Pruitt was the first voice to trigger me. A while back, I...I broke into his cabin looking for any proof he might’ve done it. I’m not proud of breaking into a potentially innocent man’s home. I didn’t find anything. I spoke to him last night. Short of asking him point-blank if he was the man who attacked me, he gave me no indication he was the one.”
Jacques leaned forward. “I’d like to interview him, if you’re okay with that…?”
Danny nodded. “Having a man question him might be better than having the victim do it.”
