Daniel shakes his head. “Robert seems to think he could be with the Dellers.”
Robert—our hacker.
“That doesn’t make any sense.” Jac comes to stand in our semi-circle. “He said he doesn’t mess with them. Unless he lied, and he really does have connections to the Dellers.”
My phone buzzes in my pocket with a text. My background of Camila from our DL Instagram lights up before I even glance at the message, and a smile spreads over my lips.
Rob: May have a track on A.
I look up to find Jac’s eyes fixed on me, his brown hair pulled back into a bun at the nape of his neck.
He cocks his eyebrow.
“Rob might’ve found a lead on Aidan. Stay vigilant,” I state and aim towards the door.
Max gives a weak laugh from behind me. “That’s the look of love.”
I freeze with my hand on the handle. Both of our guards snicker.
“I think Xander has a different definition of love in his vocabulary,” Jac chimes in, and I spin my head around as he gives me a pointed look. An unspoken communication happening between us. He wants answers. If anyone can read the slightest emotion on my face, it’s him. And now apparently fucking Max.
Answers that he’s not going to get. I have it under control, and I don’t need him to think otherwise.
“Assholes,” I grumble before exiting through the door.
Chapter 17
Camila
“I’m looking for something else,” I say over the low murmur of the Lounge as I slide up next to Corrine at the bar with an empty tray.
“What? Are you quitting?” Corrine’s flawlessly plucked eyebrows shoot to her hairline, that word leaving her mouth like I just told her the world ended. She’s wearing purple lingerie tonight, which means she’s offering her services.
“Why are you wearing lingerie?” I arch my brow at her. I don’t offer services. Everything that I do is on my own accord. My body, my rules.
“Don’t change the subject. What do you mean you’re looking for something else?”
“Why are you servicing tonight?” I shoot back at her, squinting my eyes.
“Why are you quitting?” she fires back, folding her arms. A little too loud.
“Keep your voice down,” I hiss, looking around the lounge to make sure no one heard her.
A gorgeous blonde dancer wearing a similar lingerie set walks up beside Corrine, who automatically abandons her tray of drinks and turns her full body to face her.
Their voices trail off as my mind drifts back to earlier.
Xander didn’t show up.
He wasn’t there to watch me dance like he is every night. It felt strange. I felt a little lost not having his baby blue eyes on me. Tuning out the crowd and becoming the Vixen was what once worked. Tonight, I felt like I was missing a crucial part of my performance. I couldn’t get into the role of Vixen.
Instead, I could hear every sound the crowd was making. I heard every beat and lyric of the music. I saw the fluorescent lights. I saw the men gawking. Something that I used to tune out, I couldn’t.
But I don’t care to think too much into what that means. Because as much as I wanted him to be there, clearly he’s too preoccupied with a certain brunette.
For a second, I considered running off stage. I saw Luke’s face everywhere I looked.
I slam the tray of drinks down on the bachelor table a little too forcefully at the thought of her. The way she touched Xander as they were walking back through the gate. I was just some employee to him, and she was more. She lived at his house.
