I flick on the lighter and bring the paper in front of them. “If we go down, you go down with us.” I light the paper, the flame slowly eating away at the lies, then throw it behind me onto the petrol. It ignites in a flash with a whoosh, smoke already filling the small room as the flames catch fire in the hallway.
“You psychopaths!” Heath trembles.
I shrug.
“Precisely.” Kain grins. “Exactly what you made us.”
Heath tries to crawl away, but his bloated stomach stops him from moving any distance.
“You didn’t think it would end this way, did you?” Kain inches closer towards him. “You deserve a slow, painful death, but I have someone else I’d rather spend my last minutes with.”
Vivian grips Heath’s arm, knocking him to the side.
We circle them like our personal prey. The gun from Nova is a heavy weight in my hand as I pull it out of my back pocket.
“You’re cowards,” I spit at their trembling frames, pointing the gun in their direction, the wound on my leg burning with every step. I try to keep my arm up, but the weapon is too heavy so I drop it to the floor.
“No. You were supposed to be my ticket into heaven,” Vivian argues. “You were nothing more than a sacrifice to the Lord. A sinning, tainted demon.”
I growl, running over to her and twist the knife protruding from her stomach, she grunts, blood spilling out of her mouth.
“You’re the devil incarnate.” Heath’s voice trembles as his wide eyes watch me.
Kain’s fist swings into his jaw, knocking him over into Vivian. “Shut up, old man.”
Vivian gurgles, her body jerking and ejecting blood.
The flames are inching their way into the room, there’s nothing to accelerate them, but they’re getting closer, causing sweat to run down my back, over my forehead.
It’s hot. Stuffy. Black smoke hovers around us.
But it’s nothing on the satisfaction and adrenaline running through my veins.
“I am the devil incarnate, you’re right,” I snarl into Heath’s face.
“And your worst fucking nightmares,” Kain finishes. “I hope you rot in your delusions you call heaven.” A bang shoots through the room, and Heath’s body slumps into death.
I look over at my mother, face twisting in disgust as her wide eyes plead with me. “Fuck you.” Kain hands me a knife and I stab it into her heart with everything I have left in me. She chokes and I watch as the life fades out of her eyes quickly. Then I move over to where I dropped the gun, turn, and shoot it into Heath’s face. “That’s for Kain.”
I throw the gun into the fire and stumble back before I fall to my knees. My body trembling. The fire roaring close to me.
Kain rushes over and drops in front of me, gripping my face in his hands.
“I’m so tired, Kain,” I whisper as my butt connects with the heels of my feet.
“It’s over,” he whispers as glass shatters around us, flames continuing to roar.
His face is coated in a sheen of sweat. As if his own limbs can’t keep him upright anymore, he slumps to the floor, and I lay beside him.
Our lips connect in a slow, passionate kiss where his tongue dances with mine.
“You can rest now, little devil,” he mumbles.
I can’t keep myself awake anymore. I feel like everything has been drained of me.
I have nothing more to give.
“It’s over,” I whisper, dragging my hand to his face, and feeling his skin one more time. If this is how I’m going to go, I want his beautiful face to be the last thing I see. “I love you, Kain.”
