Broken Crown

The Sebastian Diamanti of Rome had returned.

We passed through the historic gates of the city, the car's headlights reflecting off wet cobblestones that had witnessed centuries of both tragedy and triumph.

Tourists huddled under awnings and umbrellas, seeking shelter from the dying storm, while locals moved with the confident stride of those accustomed to Rome's mercurial weather.

The Colosseum loomed to our right, its massive stone arches standing defiant against time and elements, illuminated against the night sky. A monument to power, to control, to the brutal entertainment of the masses, not unlike the man beside me.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Sebastian murmured, his eyes briefly leaving the road to take in the legendary amphitheater. "No matter how many times I see it."

I nodded, unable to deny the majesty of Rome, even as the weight of its timeless shadows pressed down on me. "It's like it exists outside of time."

"Some things do," he replied, his grip tightening on my hand. "Some things are meant to last forever."

The words hung between us, heavy with promise or threat. I couldn't be sure which.

As we drove deeper into the heart of the city, past the Spanish Steps glistening with rain, the buildings pressed close on either side of the narrow streets.

The warmth, the intimacy, the possibility of love.

Sebastian thumbed the screen of his phone, his jaw tightening at whatever he read there.

"Tomorrow will come soon enough," he said cryptically as we turned onto the private street that led to the palazzo.

I looked out at the Eternal City, its weathered stones and modern lights blurring together in the rain, wondering what tomorrow would bring.

The campaign.

Sebastian's family.

My father lurking somewhere in the shadows.

All the complications we'd briefly escaped.

The palazzo appeared, its imposing facade rising from the darkness. Sebastian pulled into the courtyard, the gravel crunching beneath the tires as we came to a stop.

I stepped out of the car into the damp night air, the chill seeping through my clothes and settling into my bones, and looked up at the looming structure with its centuries of Diamanti history and secrets.

I felt smaller than I had in days.

Sebastian's hand pressed against my lower back, guiding me toward the entrance.

The gesture should have been comforting, but now it was a reminder of his control, of my captivity, of the reality I'd temporarily escaped.

When Sebastian turned away to speak to a waiting butler, I looked back through the still-open door at the storm-washed courtyard and beyond to the Eternal City spread out below.

Lightning flashed once more in the distance, illuminating Rome's historic skyline with brutal clarity before it plunged back into darkness. A fitting metaphor for what had just happened between us.

And Rome's reality, the constant politics and power plays.

Perhaps tomorrow I would begin to doubt what had happened in Chieti, to question whether Sebastian's words had been genuine or just another move in his elaborate game.

But tonight, as I climbed the marble staircase alone, the ghost of his touch still lingering on my skin, I allowed myself to hope—just for a moment—that what we shared was real.

That beneath the monster might truly be a man capable of love.

And that somewhere between revenge and desire, we might find something worth salvaging.

Tomorrow’s harsh reality would come soon enough…
