“And what am I doing to you?”
“Making me reckless.”
“No one will know.”
I whispered it. Our secret. Because he and I had always been carved in the shadows.
Restraint had him stroking his tongue over his bottom lip. A tremble rocking him through.
One that seemed to unravel him.
Because he suddenly shifted onto one knee. So close to crawling over the top of me as his palms glided up either side of my legs.
“Trevan.” His name whimpered off my tongue, and we both were caught, dragged into the swirling atmosphere.
Drawn closer and closer.
“So fucking beautiful.” It was grit.
The connection glowed, though it was somehow darker. A throbbing desire that flooded the room.
A screeching blare suddenly blasted through my apartment, and shock tore out of me with a scream.
The alarm.
Fear latched onto my spirit. A streak of horror that ripped through my being. Spreading out in tingly spikes.
Trevan flew to his feet, and I could only read the snarled words on his lips. “Stay down.”
A beast engaged. Eyes racing over the room as he prepared to throw himself into a fight.
The whirring of the alarm was deafening. A shrill scream that tore through me like a devastating omen.
I knew Trevan had instructed me otherwise, but it was instinct. The way I flew upright, one hand clinging to the back of the couch cushions and the other propping me up while I peered over the back of the couch.
My sight was blurred from the shock and the wispy trance I’d been under.
But I could still make it out.
A box that was outside on the balcony, illuminated by the sconce that hung on the wall.
What the hell?
Trevan had his phone out of his pocket, and he killed the alarm.
The eerie silence was almost louder than the alarm had been. A drawn-out ringing that I could only hear in my mind. Then he dialed and put his phone to his ear as he stormed across the floor, all stealth as he headed toward the balcony.
I could hear the muffled voice of someone on the other end of the line.
“What’s up, Trev?”
“There’s someone outside. They made it up onto the fuckin’ balcony outside the main room and left a box. Find that motherfucker, but don’t end him. He’s mine.”
THIRTY-SEVEN
TREVAN
Terror ridged my spine.
