Carved in the Shadows

Kid tipped his head back and his hair whipped around his head as his tiny giggles floated into the air.

Silas stirred at my side. “Looks like that’s my sign.”

“Never thought I’d see the day. The president fuckin’ hooked.” Regan whistled it.

A year ago, Silas would have shut that shit down so fast, Regan wouldn’t have known what hit him, but he was a changed man.

“That’s right I am. Luckiest asshole here,” Silas proclaimed as he drained his whiskey, then strode out into the sweet disorder the three of them created.

Dude all intimidating stealth in his cut and boots, but there was something elemental inside him that had gone soft.

“Might as well join,” Brody huffed like he was doing the world a favor and sauntered out into the middle of it.

That was all it took for the rest of the Crows to jump in.

This party was completely different than the types that usually went down at the club.

Nothing scandalous about the way the Crows were dancing. Taking Elena and spinning her around as they congratulated her or took turns dancing with Kai.

Regan appeared with Meems in hand, slowly guiding her through the store and onto the makeshift dance floor. He pulled her into a slow two-step, about a quarter of the normal speed. She laughed and pretended to swoon and my chest fucking swelled.

For killers, these men were good. Ingrained in decency and the oath to make this world a better place.

But I wasn’t feeling so decent when I decided to stroll out onto the floor.

Drawn.

Needing to get closer to Elena who had swapped with Phoenix and now was dancing with Brody, though the two of them were batting at each other the way they used to do when they were little kids.

Goofballs who never ceased in giving each other shit, even though they loved each other to pieces.

I tried to convince myself that my purpose was to keep an eye on Elena the way I was assigned to do. But that eye was wandering. Roaming over her body.

Gliding along the contours of that dress.

Waist snug and hips flared and legs bare.

Elena watched me, too. Taking me in the same way. Like there was a chance I could look as good to her as she did to me.

I wondered if anyone else could feel it.

The flames that erupted in the shop when our gazes united.

A sonic boom that clapped.

Piercing through me like a fiery lightning rod.

Body and soul.

Her aura thrummed and burned as she jutted her hips to the beat.

Silas edged up to Brinley, taking both her and Kai into his arms. Dancing his little family around.

Adoration diffused from him. That vast, unfathomable commitment woven into his marrow.

I did my best to stay on the outskirts. To dance around the way the rest of my brothers were doing.

There only to celebrate Elena and her achievement.
