Yep.
I slowed with the next text that came through. The tone completely changing from teasing to the soft encouragement Brinley had shown me that had helped me make it to this place.
Brinley
Congratulations, Elena. I’m so proud of you. That store is going to be incredible. Crimson Creek is lucky to have you.
Me
And I’m lucky to have you.
Brinley
No. I’m the lucky one. But now it is time for you to get lucky. I expect you to make very good use of my gift.
I choked over a surprised laugh.
Another text popped in right behind it.
Brinley
Even if it’s not him. One way or another, it’s time for you to fly.
“What are you over there giggling about?” Curiosity ridged Trevan’s strong brow.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“Nothing you need to know.” I wanted it to come across snarky, but of course, I laughed.
Trevan grunted. Mischief in his stance.
I turned back to my phone, trying to ignore him when he always tended to remain at the forefront of my mind.
I wavered, then finally decided on a response.
Me
You’re right. I am ready.
Whatever that looked like, I was ready for every experience life could bring me.
I was ready to fly.
TEN
TREVAN
By the time we were heading back to Elena’s apartment, twilight had filled the atmosphere.
It coated everything in a shimmery pink.
Trees and sky and the air floating by.
Couldn’t help but think it was fitting. Perfect for this woman who dusted the darkness with her joy.
Shed light into the shadowy places and made you feel like you might have a chance at life being normal.
