Carved in the Shadows

A glittering, billowy storm made up of a riot of colors.

Excitement radiated off Elena as she hollered my name. “Trevan! Are you ready for this?”

I wondered if she had any clue how fucking sultry her voice was.

She gestured to her new truck.

A gray Tacoma.

A prezzie from the prez.

It was loaded with a few suitcases since we’d already moved most of her things to her new apartment.

She hooked a hand on the tailgate and leaned to the side, basically allowing it to hold up her weight, and her face I had a hard time looking at since she was so damned beautiful glowed with the energy she always exuded.

She was dressed in high-waisted jeans and a pink crop top, white tennis shoes on her feet, and her hair dyed close to black was pleated into a long braid.

Innocent and sweet and far too sexy for her own good.

Then she delivered the words like she knew exactly what they would do to me.

“I can’t wait for us to be roomies!”

Roomies.

My heart stuttered a step when I said it, though I tried to play it cool and unaffected the way I always did whenever Trevan was around.

Too bad I felt all hot and bothered as he, Phoenix, and my older brother crossed from the clubhouse toward my truck.

Talk about a triple threat of aggression.

Each of them were as menacing as could be, but it was the one to the right that never failed to make my knees quake.

It didn’t matter how many times I looked at Trevan Niles, it was always the same.

The breath squeezed from my lungs and something heavy and dense settled in my belly.

“You’re awfull eager to get off this property.” Silas brought my attention to safer ground.

I looked his way to find him sauntering in my direction.

“It is basically the best day of my life,” I told him with as much sass as I could muster, a giddy smile taking to my lips.

I couldn’t help it. I was really freaking excited.

Silas huffed, though soft affection pulled at the edges of his mouth. “Because you’re leaving me?”

“Pssh, leaving you? Do you really think you’re not going to be constantly in town, bugging me? I’ll probably see you more now. You can’t help yourself but to be all up in my business.” I let the easy tease wind into the atmosphere that was tinged with a bit of tension.

I got it.

This was a big deal for my older brother. Letting me leave the Crimson Crows’ compound. Leave the safety net that he had hedged around me.

A well-meaning cage that had kept me isolated and sheltered.
