Daddy’s Fortitude

Had Charlie really left her something in his will? Well, she guessed if Kelly-Anne was carrying Charlie’s baby that made sense. A knot of dread filled her stomach. And she was glad that Ammo was sitting between her and Kelly-Anne. As Kelly-Anne took a seat, she smoothed her hand over her belly as though trying to make it more obvious that she was pregnant. Although it wasn’t like there was any sort of bump there.

Did they even know for sure that she was pregnant? Or was Aimee just being a bitch about it because she was jealous? Sometimes it was hard to know.

“Right, well, I’m sorry for this sad time,” Matthew said.

She tuned out his words as he spoke about Charlie. She wondered how well he’d even known Charlie. He had to have known the way that he died, and the reason Kelly-Anne was here, right?

“Now, onto the reading of the will. Charlie has bequeathed everything to his wife, Aimee. That includes, of course, the house, which they jointly own. And half of what is in all of the bank accounts and any other assets.”

She softly snorted. So half of nothing.

Kelly-Anne shot her a look. “Is this all funny to you? Charlie’s death is funny?”

“No. Charlie’s death isn’t funny to me. It never has been. What’s funny is the assumption that there is anything in the accounts. Or any assets.”

Matthew cleared his throat. “There is one other provision that we need to talk about. Charlie had a clause in his will that if he had any children, any money and assets that he owned would go to that child rather than his wife, Aimee.”

Was he serious right now?

Charlie had left everything he owned to his unborn child? Well, she guessed it wasn’t unfair in a way. The child was going to need something now that Charlie wasn’t here. Although in her opinion, the unborn child was probably better off without him.

“What does that mean?” Aimee asked as Kelly-Anne smiled triumphantly. God, she was such a bitch.

“It means that the child Kelly-Anne is carrying is entitled to Charlie’s share of the house and bank accounts and assets.”

“What assets?” Aimee said. “Like I said, there’s nothing in the bank accounts. All Charlie left me were bills and debt. Do you want half of those?”

Kelly-Anne narrowed her gaze at Aimee as she peered around Ammo. “You’re just bitter because Charlie loved me, because he gave me a child, and he’d never give you one. Oh, yes, he told me how you begged him, how much you wanted a child. Well, you’re not pregnant with his child, I am. And my child is entitled to half the house and everything else.”

The shock of those words settled in deep, and man, they hurt. They hurt so much.

She knew she needed to get out of there before she showed any reaction. The last thing she wanted was to let Kelly-Anne see how hurt she was. She wouldn’t give that bitch any satisfaction.

Aimee stood. “That’s fine. I understand that. You can have half the house and half of any other assets. But I want a DNA test.”

“What?” Kelly-Anne screeched, standing as well. “You can’t insist on that. She can’t insist on that, can she?” Kelly-Anne turned to Matthew.

“Well, actually, I think she can, and I think you’ll be better off just submitting to a DNA test rather than going to court,” Matthew advised.

“I’m not putting my child at risk with a DNA test. That’s not happening.”

“Then you’re not getting Charlie’s share of the house,” Aimee told her. “And you do realize there’s still a mortgage on it, so there won’t be much anyway once that gets paid.”

“You’re just trying to gaslight me,” Kelly-Anne said. “Because you want all the money. You’re just a bitch like Charlie always said. This is Charlie’s child, and I want what’s entitled to me.”

“Then get the DNA test.”

All of a sudden, Kelly-Anne lunged toward her, surprising Aimee. She hadn’t thought she’d get physical. Ammo stepped in between them swiftly, blocking Kelly-Anne from reaching Aimee with his body.

Wow. She hadn’t thought he was even paying attention. But he’d moved quick.

“You bitch!” Kelly-Anne screamed as she tried to get around Ammo. “I’m going to hurt you. Just you wait. You’re going to pay for this.”

Ammo kept moving with her until she stopped, panting.

Then he leaned down into Kelly-Anne’s space.

“Touch her and die.”
