“I’ll let you know. Hoping I’m not gonna be in here much longer.”

The deputy snorted, which just proved to him that he was listening in to the conversation.

“Don’t worry, Gwen will take care of that.”

He ended the call, and the deputy manhandled him back to the cell, pushing him inside. Well, he tried to push him, but Ammo didn’t go anywhere he didn’t want to. Ammo turned to glare at the deputy, and then he changed tack and smiled.

The deputy swallowed nervously and backed out, slamming the door shut.

They were all going to pay for this, and they better hope that Aimee was all right, or he was going to go for blood.

Ammo fucking hated sitting here feeling so damn helpless, unable to do anything.

Several hours had to have passed before the cell door opened again, and then it was the sheriff standing there. Oh, and he didn’t look happy. So Ammo figured that Gwen had moved fast.

Ammo stayed seated, as though he didn’t have a care in the world.

“Come on, boy. Time to go.”

“Am I being released on bail?” he asked as he stood.

“All charges have been dropped,” the sheriff said stiffly.

“Really? Dropped? How interesting. Is it because there was no assault to begin with?” He moved toward the sheriff, looming over him.

“Careful, boy. I could have you for assault.”

“Are you threatening my client, Sheriff Willoughby?” Ammo looked over the sheriff’s shoulder to see Gwen standing there. Dominic was next to her. “Because I’m not going to take it well if you are.”

“Who said you could come back here?” the sheriff said, snarling at her.

She put her arm up to stop Dominic from moving forward.

“Oh, Sheriff, you’re really going to pay for all of this,” Gwen said. “I don’t like false accusations against my friends. I don’t like threats, and I think it’s very interesting how you took the word of your niece and arrested my client without any evidence.”

The sheriff looked like he was sweating now. “There was evidence.”

“Really? What evidence? Kelly-Anne’s word? Kelly-Anne, who has been known to lie about quite a few things, has she not? She’s also got past arrests for shoplifting and fraud. Charges that all seemed to have disappeared somehow. That’s quite interesting too, isn’t it, Sheriff?” Gwen said. “You didn’t even bother to check with the witnesses regarding this alleged assault. One witness came forward and you told her that if she said anything, it could be considered slander and a waste of your time, and result in her ending up in jail.”

Ammo turned to the sheriff. “You threatened to put Aimee in jail?”

“All of you need to leave now before I throw you all in jail.”

“Oh, Sheriff, is that the way you operate around here? Someone says something you don’t like, and you throw them in jail?” Gwen took several steps forward. “Enjoy your last few days as sheriff, because I’m going to ensure that you lose your job. I don’t like people who abuse their power, and I make it my mission to ensure that they’re never able to do that again. So I’d think hard about my next moves if I was you, Sheriff. Might be time for retirement, yeah? Come on, Ammo. Let’s go.”

The sheriff glared after them but didn’t say anything.

“You made yourself an enemy there,” Ammo warned as they walked toward the front of the building.

“Really, me?” Gwen said with a smile. “I usually make friends wherever I go.”

Dominic just shook his head. “Don’t worry about Gwen. I’ve got her well-protected. You just worry about yourself and that gorgeous girl you’ve got outside. She looks a bit stressed, she might need some care.”

“Aimee’s out there?”

“Yep. We flew in early this morning, and I started doing some research into what is going on straight away. The charges were absolute bullshit, and the sheriff should never have arrested you. The accuser is his niece, so he should have recused himself for a start. Not to mention she’s got some history of doing this. Making false accusations against people that she doesn’t like. Believe me, I could put a whole case against this sheriff and the department. Soon as we got here, we went to your girl’s place.”

Ammo didn’t bother correcting her that Aimee wasn’t his girl.
