He carefully took hold of the key, and then gently pushed her to one side so that he could open the door and step in. She followed after him. Gwen and Dominic had been here this morning, but she still felt a bit of a wave of embarrassment at the state of her house.
Although the look on their faces didn’t change as they walked into the living room.
“Can I get everyone coffee? Something to eat?” she said, clenching her hands together nervously.
“We’re all good,” Gwen said.
“You just sit down,” Dominic told her.
Ammo didn’t say anything, but he did reach out, grasp one of her hands, and tug her toward the sofa, sitting her down. Instead of sitting in the opposite corner, he sat right next to her, with his thigh touching hers and his arms spread out across the back of the sofa. If she leaned back, she’d be nestled in against his arm.
This was too much. Arousal and want filled her. She wanted nothing more than to curl up next to him, to tell him everything that she was worrying about, and to let him take the worry all away.
But that wasn’t possible, and she needed to remember that, so she held herself stiffly away from him as Gwen and Dominic sat across from them.
“Right,” Gwen said. “Well, I’ve got a few things to go on, such as some further investigation into Kelly-Anne. This isn’t the first time she’s falsely accused someone of doing something, just because they did something to annoy her. She’s also had quite a few charges against her vanish. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the sheriff has made them disappear. But don’t worry, I’ll discover what they are. I want to do some research around town today. I will also send a letter to the lawyer as well as Kelly-Anne, about the DNA test that we are going to insist on.”
Aimee sucked in a breath. Gwen was going to do all of that for her, but how would she pay her? She didn’t have any money.
“And I will also get someone to investigate Charlie forging your signature on certain loans. I’ll need the paperwork on that, though. And I’ll have to hire someone to look into that, because I just don’t have time to do it myself.”
“Not a problem,” Ammo replied.
“I’m also going to pay the funeral director a visit while I’m here. Put the fear of God into him for overcharging you,” Gwen added. “Zander told me about him.”
“Asshole,” Dominic muttered.
“Thank you for everything you’ve done and for getting Ammo out of jail. I was so scared. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I thought the sheriff would keep him in there all weekend. But all this other stuff, I can’t ask you to do that,” she said.
“You’re not asking me,” Gwen said. “I’d investigate the sheriff and Kelly-Anne anyway because of what happened to Ammo. Nobody goes after one of our own and gets away with it.”
Oh, that was good. She was doing most of this for Ammo.
“But the other things like looking into Charlie and the forged signatures, I mean, I can’t pay for that,” she said.
She felt ashamed at having to admit that, but it was better that they knew the truth now than find it out later.
“You’re not paying for it,” Ammo said. “Send the bill to me.”
Oh, great. So it would just get added to the tab that she owed him. But what else was she going to do?
“Will you be able to get your money back if Charlie did forge those signatures?” she asked him.
“We’ll get the money back,” Gwen said firmly. “Besides, didn’t you just pay the minimum off, Ammo?”
Ammo nodded. “The loans didn’t look right to me, so I paid enough to buy us some time.”
To investigate those forged signatures? He was always looking out for her.
And she brought him nothing but trouble.
“Thanks for coming, Gwen,” Ammo told her. “Appreciate it.”
“Just as well I did as I think the sheriff probably would’ve tried to keep you in all weekend,” Gwen said. “And even though Mr. Briggs said he was going to take the video footage to the sheriff today, as well as give him a statement, I’m not sure that he would have acted on it. I’m going to go get to work now. Perhaps the two of you should have a rest. Keep a bit of a low profile for a while. But don’t worry, Aimee. I’m going to make sure that Kelly-Anne never bothers you again.” Gwen smiled and it reminded her a bit of a shark. She was glad that she was on their side.
“I’ll walk you out,” Ammo said.
“Thanks for coming,” she told Gwen and Dominic. “I really mean that. I have no idea what I would have done if you hadn’t.”
