“In the bed with you,” Ammo said quietly.
She felt around, finding him next to her hip under the blankets.
Aimee breathed out a sigh of relief. “You rescued me?”
“Yes, I was nearly too late. I should’ve been there with you. It wouldn’t have happened if I’d been there.”
There was a note of anger in his voice, and she knew that anger was all aimed at himself, but he couldn’t blame himself. Who knew what would have happened if he was there? Maybe he’d have been caught up in the fire as well.
“Let me just take your vitals, and then the doctor can talk to you about when you get to go home,” Minnie said, startling her.
Shoot. She’d forgotten the nurse was still there.
“How long have I been asleep?” she asked.
“About sixteen hours,” Ammo told her.
Minnie finished taking her vitals and then left after promising to bring her something for her throat.
“The house?” she asked.
“Completely gone, apparently. That’s what Kirsten said. I haven’t been there. I’ve been here with you the whole time.”
“How did you get me out?” she whispered. Her throat was really burning now.
“Smashed the window, climbed in and got you. It all happened real quick.”
“You risked yourself to save me.” She stared at him in awe.
“Of course I did,” he said. “I’d do it again. I’d do anything to save you.”
“Why? she whispered. “Why do you care so much about me?”
He stared down at her intently. “Because I have feelings for you.”
Aimee gaped at him.
Because I have feelings for you.
It was almost a declaration of love coming from Ammo. He never admitted to having feelings, well, other than anger or frustration.
Oh, wait, maybe that was what he meant.
“Are you still angry at me?” she said. “You’re still upset with what I said? I only said it to keep you safe.”
He tilted his head to the side, studying her. “What do you mean, to keep me safe?”
Shoot, she hadn’t meant to say that.
“I didn’t mean to say safe. I misspoke. Are you still mad at me? For what I said? I just thought it was better for both of us.”
He narrowed his gaze at her. But then Minnie came back with a warm honey drink for her to sip on. She raised the back of the bed for Aimee before putting the cup on the bedside table and leaving.
“Are those the feelings you were talking about?” she asked. “Anger, annoyance, frustration?”
“No, those aren’t the feelings I’m talking about.”
Then what was he talking about?
