Which meant that someone else was firing a gun!

Ammo left Aimee at the toilet.

He moved toward the truck. He’d take off the pack, check that Kevin was okay, then head get on the road as quickly as possible. Although they still had to swing by and grab Eli and say goodbye to Kirsten.

But as he grew closer to the parking area, he saw a man standing there holding a gun on Webb, who had his hands raised.

Webb glanced at him, his eyes widening.

Shit. Webb had his back to the truck and was facing the main path. If Ammo had come down that path, the man holding the gun on Webb would have had his back to him, and he could have snuck up on him.

But now the gunman could immediately see Ammo there. Was he losing his edge? He was definitely distracted because of Aimee, but he was also grateful that she wasn’t there with them. How was he going to keep her safe though? She was about to stumble on them at any moment.

“Who are you? What do you want?” he said. “If it’s money, I can grab my wallet out of my pocket and you can go.”

Seemed a weird place to rob a guy, though.

“You don’t recognize me? You don’t recognize the man whose life you ruined?” the gunman snarled.

Ammo frowned slightly. There was something familiar about him. He searched through his memory.

A life he’d ruined?

And then it clicked. He was someone that Ammo had tracked down when he’d worked as a bond enforcement agent.

Fuck. Yes. He remembered this asshole. He was older. Worn. But he still had that bitter look to him.

He spotted Webb tensing and got ready to help him when he took this asshole down.

“That’s right. It’s coming back to you now, isn’t it? You ruined my life, and now I’m here to ruin yours.”

The man suddenly fired the gun, hitting Webb who had been about to jump him. Webb dropped to the ground with a groan. Fuck.

“You think I don’t know when someone is about to jump me? I just spent the last ten years in jail!”

Ammo lunged toward Webb who was lying on the ground. He had to help him. Had to stop the bleeding. Another gunshot went off, this one landing a few feet in front of him.

Ammo paused. He had to think rationally. This wasn’t like him. He didn’t lose control. He didn’t allow his feelings and emotions to get in the way of what he needed to do, which is what he’d just done as he’d tried to run for Webb. He couldn’t do anything for him if he was shot too, and he definitely couldn’t help Aimee.

“What do you want?” Ammo said. “What happened was a long time ago.”

“Yeah, a long time to spend in jail,” the guy said. “Away from my family, my kids.”

Ammo racked his brain trying to remember this guy’s circumstances, and then it came to him. “You were arrested for domestic violence. You were beating your wife, then you got out on bail and you went straight to her and beat her up again. And now you’re crying about it because you ended up in jail away from your family?”

“That bitch deserved it,” he snarled. “She used to rile me up. It was her fault. She caused me to lose control and hit her.”

Fuck. Guys like this disgusted him. He wondered how easy it would be to kill him and bury the body.

Zander would help. Honey definitely would.

“Yeah, yeah, man. Heard that before. Always blaming the victim, huh? What a man you are.”

Probably not the smartest thing to do . . . riling up the guy who was holding a gun on him.

But he couldn’t seem to stop himself.
