“He’s not,” Jeremy muttered.

“Good to know.”

“You’re both fired!” Hendricks said. “Get out, both of you!”

Wonderful.

She waited for Ammo’s reaction, but he just smiled.

That wasn’t a good sign. Ammo hardly ever smiled. She wondered what he was going to do. Right at this moment, she didn’t want to ever see Mr. Hendricks or this place again. And she couldn’t find the energy to be upset about losing her job.

Maybe tomorrow she would be, but not tonight.

But he had no right to fire Jeremy. The young guy was just trying to do his best to look out for her and to earn some money for college. She couldn’t let him lose his job over her.

“You can’t fire Jeremy,” she said weakly.

“It’s fine because I don’t want to work for you anyway,” Jeremy said.

Aimee glanced up at him in concern, but he just shook his head at her. “I mean it. I don’t want to work for him anymore.”

“Good. All of you need to get out before I call the sheriff and have you thrown out,” Hendricks huffed.

“Try it,” Ammo growled at him. “Just try it, and we’ll see if your business lasts out the month.”

“Did you just threaten me? You all heard him threaten me, didn’t you?” Hendricks glanced around and saw that everybody seemed to have gathered at both ends of the aisle. There weren’t that many of them, six in total. On the whole, they were all actually good people.

And they were all frowning at Mr. Hendricks. No one agreed with him.

“I think you’ll find that being a shit boss doesn’t get you much loyalty,” Ammo told him.

“Everyone is fired,” Hendricks roared, his face growing all blotchy and red.

“Good luck getting the work done then,” Jeremy said.

Ammo strode over to her, and she tried to block out Mr. Hendricks’s spluttering and angry expletives.

He crouched down next to her. “Sorry about that.” He ran his fingers over her head. “Where are you hurt? How do you feel?”

“I’m all right, just a bit sore and tired.” She gave him a weak smile. “Sorry about all of this.”

“You have nothing to apologize for, you hear me?” he said to her sternly. “Tell me what happened and where it hurts.”

“You people need to get out of here. I won’t put up with you being here any longer.”

Ammo glanced over his shoulder at Mr. Hendricks. “I’m sick of you. Say goodbye to life as you knew it, because it’s soon going to be over.”

Hendricks glared down at him but didn’t seem to have anything else to say as he turned and stormed off.

She let out a breath of relief.

“I’ll go get your stuff for you,” Jeremy told her.

“Thanks,” she said to him, feeling breathless. Then she glanced up into Ammo’s face and saw the concern in it.

“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “I just felt tired and dizzy, and then I reached down to grab a can of peaches. When I stood up, everything went black, and I woke up to find Jeremy and Mr. Hendricks arguing about calling an ambulance for me. I’m glad they didn’t. I don’t need one. I’m probably just tired or something.”

“Did you eat the breakfast I gave you this morning?” he asked.
