Neeve wrung her hands before answering. “It was a standard SUV with blacked-out windows, the sort any mafia boss would travel in, and the plane was private. The flight attendant called the creepy one by an S name, like Sarah, Sophia, or Sabine. I’m not really sure. But it definitely started with an S and ended in an A sound.”

Severin nodded. “Thank you. That’s very helpful.”

“Did they show you any more abilities?” he asked.

“Wait,” I interrupted. “Are you gonna casually dismiss the fact that these women are ghosts? I mean, that’s insane, and the footage didn’t seem doctored.”

Nika crossed her arms. “Yeah, that’s old news.”

“To you, maybe.” I turned to Severin. “You clearly aren’t surprised.”

“I’m not.” He sat back casually.

“What the fuck?” I asked. “Why not?”

“Remember that ghost I told you about hunting my men?”

“Yes.” I stretched the word like taffy.

“Turns out she is an actual ghost… or something like it.”

Something like it.

I wasn’t a ghost. I was a Fury. But that was semantics. Important semantics, though, because ghosts couldn’t become solid and live in the real world.

“Well, fuck,” I said.

Severin rolled up his suit sleeves. “And she set the warehouse I was in on fire and caused these scars.”

He showed me the raw, red skin still healing from his burns.

“She sounds lovely.” I swallowed hard. “And you think she’s the same ghost?”

“Possibly,” he agreed. “It would make sense.” He turned back to Neeve. “Do you know who took you?”

Don’t you?

My eyebrows rose.

Neeve licked her lips nervously. “Yes. There’s a trafficking cult called the Leathean Order.”

Severin nodded.

“They kidnap mostly women to use for sex and whatever else their hearts desire.” Her voice shook. “They rent you out to men who can do anything they want. That footage was from a marathon day, when lower-ranking members get to rent you together or for shorter intervals.”

“That’s disgusting,” Severin growled. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”

Are you?

My nails dug into my palms. None of this was supposed to be new information to him.

Goosebumps rose on my skin.

He sounded so convincing, as if he knew nothing about the Order, but the best liars were usually the most convincing people. That’s why they made great CEOs and billionaires.

“I think that’s enough,” I said, fighting to keep the anger out of my voice.

Neeve was barely holding back full-body tremors.
