He nodded slowly. “He treating you right?”

“He is.”

“He’s a lucky man.” His gaze dragged over me longingly.

“What about you, beautiful?” Jonah asked Siani.

“Her annoying ass got a man too,” I said, sticking my tongue out at her. Jonah looked more disappointed than Enzo did, but he should be glad. Siani would’ve run that nigga’s pockets dry.

They lingered for a few more minutes before returning to their end of the bar.

“You really turned down a sexy, wealthy, nice-smelling man,” Siani mused smugly.

“I flirted.”

She rolled her eyes. “Oh bitch, you know what I mean. If this were three months ago, Enzo would’ve been back at our little cottage.”

“Life comes at you fast.”

“That’s exactly my point.”

I finished my mojito, not giving her the satisfaction of a response.

“Have you talked to Cardez since we’ve been here?” Siani asked.

“Nothing more than a generic good morning text.”

She cringed. “Yikes. He’s big mad. So, you’re gonna hit him up once we get back?”

I sighed. “I guess? I don’t know. I’ll figure it out on the plane.”

“That’s not a plan, Lala.”

“It’s the best I got right now, Si.” I waved down the bartender for another round. “It’s our last night. I wanna get drunk and not talk about this dumpster fire I’m in.”

She held up her hands. “Say less. But when you get back—”

“You’ll be the first to know.”

“Fine.” She picked up the drink the bartender set down and clinked it against mine. “To falling in love and figuring our shit out.”

“To figuring our shit out.”

23 CARDEZ MONTAGUE

“Mr. Montague. I apologize for calling without notice, but I wanted to flag something before it went any further.” It was Curtis Webb, my accountant. His voice had that careful tone he used whenever he was about to deliver news that would piss me off.

“Uh huh.”

“There were transfers out of two separate accounts last week. The Meridian Group and Valley Partners. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, all routed to the same investment firm. A Blackwater Associates. Are you familiar with them?”

“Curtis, this is what I pay you for. Are you familiar with them?”

He cleared his throat. “I don’t have any record of this being authorized, and we’ve never done any business with them. They appear to be registered but I can’t really find any other information.”

“Send me everything you have on it.”

“Already in your inbox.”
