“No,” I whisper to him. “Go. It’s okay. I’ll be here.”
“You’re sure, Angel? I don’t want to leave you alone.”
I nod. “I’m sure. Go, Fabien. It’s better for you to be in there than out here.”
He stares at me.
Clement’s staring at us, saying nothing but taking it all in.
“I’ll wait for you,” I say.
He squeezes my hand. For a heartbeat I feel like he’s going to stay. But then he lets go.
“Whatever is going on, I’ll be back for you,” he says softly. “I promise.”

FABIEN
I taste blood in my mouth.
It’s just what happened before.
My parents killed by the Masked Killer.
And now, years later, another Supreme Elder found dead.
“Is it true?” Clement hisses to Baptiste as we step into the hallway of the mansion. “Is it really him?”
Like me, Baptiste is still evidently in shock. He doesn’t say a word.
But he doesn’t need to. Cromwell Auclair swoops in front of us before we reach the doors to the mansion’s main meeting room.
I freeze at the sight of him. The man who made Jolie send that email.
My hands curl into fists.
Not here. Not now.
“What have you heard, Father?” Clement asks him.
Cromwell looks at each of us in turn and grimaces.
“It’s as bad as you can imagine.”
Fuck.
“The Masked Killer?” Baptiste asks softly.
Cromwell nods.
So, that’s it confirmed, then.
“Have they got him?” Clement questions.
His father shakes his head.
“He’s gone. Disappeared.”
