He snapped his fingers together. “Tiffany Blake recently interviewed Harvey.”
“What?”
“For a research paper she was doing. One about Nate. She thought he was innocent.”
Kimber sucked in a breath. “The shrine—uh, murder wall. That’s why she had those pictures all over her dorm? For a research paper?”
“You saw her dorm?”
“I-I was with Jonah yesterday.” Jonah and Shelby but she didn’t want to talk about Shelby then. She didn’t really want to talk about anything with Gabriel. She wanted him to move. She wanted to get in her car. And she wanted to take care of her business.
“Tiffany had been corresponding with Nate.”
That sounded ominous. “Why the hell would she do that?”
“I have the notes he sent her in my office, just across campus.” His glasses sent her reflection back to her. “They were at my house, but I brought them here today.”
Uh, good for him?
“I brought quite a few files over from my house to my office. Figured they’d be a lot more secure here.”
Why would he figure that?
“Want to see them?” Gabriel prompted.
“Why on earth would I want to see them? Give them to Jonah. Turn them over to the cops. I have no interest in them.” She motioned toward him again. “And get off my car. Jeez. You’re in charge of PR and suddenly everyone thinks you have to be putting out every single fire that so much as smokes—”
“You can act like you don’t know anything about the murders, but that’s a lie.”
I see you.
A shiver skated down Kimber’s spine.
“Tiffany had done some digging. She knew you were once part of Shelby’s sorority, before it got shut down.”
Because so many of the sorority sisters had been brutally murdered. Yep, hard to interest new pledges when everyone was afraid of being murdered.
“I’d really like to talk with you,” Gabriel said as he slowly straightened. “I’d like to let you know what I think about high-level predators.”
A chill chased down her spine.
“I think you could be in danger,” he added. “Based on Tiffany’s work, the material I have reviewed, it seems like the killer who took Tiffany out may be someone who has been here all along. Someone who might be close to you.”
Right then, he was the one closest to her. “Yes, how about I check my schedule and get back with you?”
“You could be in danger, Kimber.”
It was awfully hot out there.
“I want to help you.” He took off his glasses. Stared at her. “Let me help you?”
She bit her lower lip. Her hand rose once more, and, this time, her fingers played with the strand of pearls around her neck. “Why would I be in danger?”
“Because a long time ago, you fucked Nate Shiloh.”
Oh, crap.
“And I think the past is coming back with a vengeance.”
