"Boss."

"What do we know?" he asked.

Luca handed him a tablet. "Fingerprint analysis came back thirty minutes ago." Soren studied the report. The person was female with no criminal record. He read further, and his heart nearly stopped when he read who it was—Former Assistant District Attorney, Rachel Monroe. He recognized the name immediately.

"How does she know Collins?" he asked.

"She'd been building a case against him,” Luca said.

Soren frowned. "For how long?"

"Almost two years,” Luca breathed. That explained why Collins had become increasingly paranoid over the last several months.

"He never knew who was investigating him?” Soren asked.

"No,” Luca said.

Soren looked up. "But she knew him."

"And now, they know she was there,” Luca said.

Silence settled over the room. Soren studied Rachel's personnel file. She was forty-one, divorced, lived alone, and had no children. A woman like that didn't accidentally stumble into an execution. She'd been gathering evidence, which meant she knew things Lily never would.

"Luca,” Soren growled.

"Yeah?"

"Send two teams to find out what happened,” he ordered.

"Already done,” Luca said. He could always read Soren’s mind and stay a few steps ahead of him.

"Did they check out her home?"

Luca's expression darkened. "It was empty."

Soren looked at him. "How empty are we talking?"

"The front door was standing open." His jaw tightened. "There were no signs of forced entry."

"Any signs of her being hurt? Was there any blood?” Soren asked.

"There was a little blood found in the kitchen,” Luca said.

"Enough to give us any clue about what happened?"

"No, there wasn’t enough to tell us anything.”

Soren set the tablet down. Someone had gotten to Rachel before they had, but that wasn't the part bothering him. The part bothering him was that there hadn't been enough blood to prove foul play. If she wasn't dead, then she had to be running. And the thing that worried him the most was that desperate people made desperate choices.

“Everybody out except for Luca!” Soren shouted.

The room emptied until only the two of them remained.

Luca folded his arms over his chest. "You've got that look."

"What look?" Soren asked.

"The one that says you've already made a decision about what you’re going to do,” Luca said.
