“We don’t have time for both of us to spiral. After we address the latest mishap, you can tell me again how pretty and smart I am, and I’ll tell you the same. And maybe we can seal it with a kiss or…” Something more. I’m closing in on a monthslong dry spell that if I have to separate from him again—I hope not—then I’d want to do it with a bang. “Right now, I need you to reach around the computer to see if you can unplug it for me.”
Rennix does as I say and…no luck. The computer is still on and, lucky me, more of my old statuses start to clutter the screen.
“I think it wants us to read them.”
“Not happening,” I quip.
Rennix looks over his shoulder. “The next door isn’t here yet. Which I think means our time in this room isn’t complete yet.”
“You think? I thought you created all this.”
“Yes and no, remember?” he reminds me. “I can go through it if you don’t want to.”
“No!” I realize I should adjust my tone since Rennix’s shoulders spring up at how loud I just shouted. “I mean, no, that’s okay. I can handle it.” Even if I’d rather stick a needle in my eye while running barefoot on a bed of rusty nails.
I tell Rennix to turn around so I can read them and die inside in peace.
“But…”
My hands spring to my ears, shielding them. “La la la la la la la.”
“Calm down, A Day to Remember, I’m turning around.”
“Good boy,” I blurt out, distracted by the plethora of veins I keep staring at protruding from his forearms.
Well, there goes that. He was halfway turned around and now he’s staring at me with a mischievous—kissable—grin on his face.
“Good boy?”
I shake my head instead of punching it with the fist I have clenched like a lady on my lap. “Sorry, you know with all the stress I’ve been going through, between the fact I’m about to be evicted and then being trapped in limbo, my brain feels like mush. I didn’t mean to say that.”
He licks his lips as he peers down at the ground for a second. “It’s okay. I didn’t mind.”
Ah, spoken like such a good boy.
“But what do you mean by evicted?”
“You know, the process of evicting someone from their residence.”
He chuckles. “I know what evicted means. I also know that you shouldn’t use a word to describe said word’s meaning.”
“Okay, Professor Steele. What is this, English lit class?”
“Sorry. I’m a nerd, remember? Can’t help it.”
“No, it’s fine. It’s…” Hot. “…charming.”
“Thanks.” He’s blushing, and it’s fucking adorable.
“Anyhow, I’m assuming this sadistic fuck wants me to read through these statuses for us to get to the next level. So, you turn around and I will get to reading and all will be as good as it’s going to get.”
As soon as I start reading, I realize it’s not going to get better, only worse.
tonight will be the night that…I will scream into the void.
