“I’m probably going out of town next week, so some errands.”
“How long are you going out of town for?” I’m disappointed that I won’t see him for a while, which is crazy.
“I’m not sure.” He shrugs. “Depends on how long my work takes me.”
“What sort of work? Like an investigation or something?”
“Or something.”
“You’re not going to tell me what you’re doing?”
“It would be boring to you.”
He opens the fridge and pulls out some eggs and cheese, and I watch as he cracks open the eggs. It’s nice, being here, in his place, and it just makes me want to know more about him.
“Are you going to be back in time for Sage and Dalton’s wedding? I mean, you have to be there, right? Aren’t you the best man?”
“Roman’s the best man,” he says, shaking his head as he adds salt and pepper to the bowl. “Would you like some bacon and onions in the omelet?”
“Yes, please.”
“Great. I’ll get you that coffee as well. Milk and sugar?”
“Yes, please, if you have it.”
I watch as he grabs a cup from his cupboard and pours coffee and then milk into it. “How many sugars?”
“Two, please. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
He heads over to me and hands me the coffee, and I take a sip. Everything between us is so polite and formal, and while I appreciate that he’s such a good guy, I want to feel closer to him. I want to know this man. He intrigues me in a way no one in my life ever has before. There’s a story behind his eyes, and I want to read the book.
“This is amazing. Thank you.” I lean back into the couch and stare back at him as he grabs bacon out of the fridge. “So, you’ll be back for the wedding, right? You didn’t say.”
“I should be able to make it.”
“I don’t suppose you want to go with me. I mean, as friends. I don’t want to be the single sister standing there alone, like some sort of spinster.” Ugh, I want to slap myself for asking him to be my date.
“You’re not a spinster,” he says, shaking his head. “Plus, I’m sure you’ll have a date by that time, seeing as you’re speed dating and all that.”
“I guess, but like you saw last night, the speed dating’s not going well. And didn’t you tell me that you were going to help me?”
“What do you mean, help you?”
“You were going to help me find a good guy.”
He grunts in response, and I watch as he starts cutting the onion.
“I don’t recall saying that.”
“Come on, Brett. Don’t you want to help me find love?”
“I think you can find love without my help.”
“Brett Selleck … I need your help.” My phone starts ringing, and I pause. “Oh, it’s Lucia. Do you mind if I take this?”
“Not at all.”
