The Boyfriend Bet

by J.S. Cooper

“What bet?”

“You help me find a boyfriend because I’m looking for true love, and I’ll help you find someone to have fun with.”

“I don’t really get what you’re saying.”

“Well, you said you’d help me, and I want to help you. Maybe that will make you loosen up. And just because you don’t want to have sex with me doesn’t mean you don’t want to have sex, right?”

“I mean, I’ll never say never.” I chuckle and offer her a lascivious wink.

She looks annoyed, and I wonder if she’s jealous, but I’m not going to ask her.

“So, we have a bet. You help me find true love, I help you find someone to have fun with, and whoever succeeds first is the winner.”

“I don’t really know what I would win.”

“I mean, if you win, I’ll stop setting you up, and if I win, then everything’s good.”

“That sounds boring. What about if we go camping?”

“Camping?” she groans. “What?”

“Yeah. What if we go to the Grand Tetons, and if I win, we go camping, and if you win, we get to stay in a hotel?”

“A five-star hotel?” Her eyes light up. “That sounds amazing. I’d love to see some bison and elk.”

“Yeah, sure. But obviously, separate tents or rooms.”

“Obviously,” she says, rolling her eyes.

“I’m going to win, Rosie, and you’re going to go camping, and then you’ll realize that you totally don’t want to be with me.”

“I totally don’t want to be with you, Brett. Does that make you feel better?”

“It makes me feel great.”

“So, the bet is on.”

She holds her hand out, and I shake it.

“The bet is on.”

She leans back, grabs her phone and her purse, and opens the door. “I’m totally not going camping, by the way.”

“Oh, you totally are.”

“You do realize that we’re going to be together either way.” She tilts her head to the side. “If I win, we’re together, and if you win, we’re together.” She points at me and offers me a wide smile. “I’m beginning to think you do kinda like me.”

“Uh, no,” I stammer as I realize she’s right. “I’m showing you that I’m not right for you. I like camping and roughing it. You’re looking for luxury.”

“Sure, Brett. Whatever you want to tell yourself.” There’s a self-satisfied expression on her face.

“I think you’re just …” My voice trails off as she winks at me and leans back. “We’re not actually together either way. We’re just—”

“No need to get flustered, Brett.” She rubs my thigh and grips my knee. “I’m going to find you such an amazing woman, and you’re going to be thanking me. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even fall in love with her.”

“Very much doubt it, seeing as I’m not looking for that and I don’t want that.”

“Okay, sure you don’t, but you’ll be thanking me when you’re having hot sex.”
