“Hi, I’m Clara,” the first one says. She has big blue eyes, and she gives me a huge hug. “You’re obviously Rosie, my darling brother’s girlfriend.”
“Hi, Clara,” I say.
“Hi, I’m Blair,” her sister says. She has the same silky hair, but her eyes are light brown, like Brett’s. When I look closer, I can see a hazel hue. “Good to meet you,” she says, giving me a hug.
“You too.”
“We’re going to have so much fun with this,” she whispers in my ear.
She pulls back and winks at me, and I can’t help but grin back. I already love his sisters, and I’m so grateful they’re here this weekend.
“So, do you two want to have some prosecco with us in the kitchen and then maybe go for a swim?” Clara says, grabbing Brett’s hand.
Brett looks at me, and I nod.
“Sounds good.”
“Come on then. Let’s go.”
“I guess we’ll be seeing you all later,” Theodore says.
“Sure, Granddad. For dinner?”
“Sounds good. It’s very nice to meet you, Rosie.”
“Nice to meet you too, Mr. Selleck.”
“Oh, no, please call me Theodore.”
“And of course, call me Lena,” his wife says, beaming at me.
“Oh, sure.” I look over at Tyson and Celia, and they’re not even bothering to use fake smiles now.
“You can call us Mr. and Mrs. Selleck,” Celia says, “seeing as we don’t really know you. Come on, darling. Let’s go upstairs. I want to play a game of cribbage later.”
“Yes, darling, coming.”
Tyson and Celia walk up the stairs.
Clara keeps tugging on Brett’s hand. “Come on. Let’s go.”
We follow her down the hallway to a large kitchen.
“Oh my gosh, you’re finally here.” Clara lowers her voice and looks at me. “You’re so pretty, and you’re so nice to be doing this. By the way, I’m so sorry. My parents are such bitches.”
“Really, Clara?” Brett tells her off, and she rolls her eyes.
“Come on. You know it; we know it. They’re the biggest snobs on the West Coast.”
“Unfortunately, she’s right,” Blair says, making a face. “Don’t think we don’t know it. Just ignore our parents. Our grandparents are lovely though.”
“Oh, thanks. I’ll try.”
“You’re so sweet to do this for Brett. He’s so lucky he has a friend like you,” Clara says as she hands me a glass of prosecco. “And just so we’re on the same page, when are you going to propose?”
I stare at Brett, and he grins. “I was thinking Sunday brunch, in front of everyone.”
“Oh my gosh, Mom is going to collapse on the floor,” Blair says, giggling. “I love it.”
