“He’s not going to change it.” Clara is obstinate.
“Come on now. That’s Granddad and he can do what he wants.”
“Your granddad seems so nice though,” Rosie says.
“Oh, he’s nice, but he wants the Selleck name to continue.” Clara sighs. “But you know, my big bro is hella stubborn.”
“I think I know that.” Rosie giggles.
“What are you trying to say?” I glare at them both.
“I’m saying I know a bit about you being stubborn and overbearing.” Rosie’s eyes glow.
“I’m not overbearing, and you sure didn’t think so last night.”
“Oh, I totally did.” She winks at me.
“You two,” Clara says, rolling her eyes. “It’s only me here.”
“I know, but we have to keep the act going with you here as well,” Rosie says quickly, blushing and looking down.
I grab my water and sip. I’m sure Rosie is as confused as I am about whether this is still part of the act. I don’t know where the act ends and reality begins.
“Hello, my darling grandchildren.” Grandfather walks into the room, followed by Grandmother. “Good morning, everyone.”
“Oh, Rosie, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes?” Grandmother’s soothing voice is happy as she gazes at Rosie. “Thank you so much for joining us this weekend. I look forward to seeing you when we go to Catalina. You’ll be coming with us on the ferry.”
“The what?” Rosie looks over at me, and I grin.
“I haven’t told her about all our family plans yet.”
“He’s still getting her used to you guys so she doesn’t leave him or say no when he—” Clara starts, and I glare at her. She closes her mouth and shakes her head.
“So, are you looking forward to going back to work this week?” Grandfather asks Rosie.
She shrugs. “It’s okay. I can’t say my life’s dream was to be a waitress, but I enjoy it, and I get to work with my friends and my sister, and it gives me time to do stand-up comedy.”
“You’re a stand-up comedian?” Clara says loudly. “Brett, why didn’t you tell us?”
“I’m only getting started. I would’ve been mortified if he’d told you,” Rosie says, smiling. “But I’m enjoying it, and maybe one day, my comedy will make people laugh and be happy. That’s why I do it.”
“She’s funny. She’s very funny. She did a show recently and got a standing ovation.”
“I wouldn’t say it was a standing ovation.”
“It was a standing ovation.”
“Well, it was a standing ovation from you, Izzy, Sage, Lucia, Roman, and Dalton, but I was grateful for it.”
“I want to see you,” Clara says. “Blair and I are going to come. You have to tell us the next time you have a show.”
“I’d love for you guys to come.” Rosie smiles at her.
Grandfather nods approvingly. “That’s what I like to see. Family sticking together. Who knows? Maybe your grandmother and I will come one day to support you.”
“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Rosie says quickly. “My jokes can be dirty, and …”
“I may be old, but I’m not a prude,” Grandfather says, and he and Grandmother start laughing. “I think this weekend has been very successful. Brett, may I speak to you for a moment?”
