“What do you mean, one of?”

I start laughing. “You’re always looking for a compliment, aren’t you?”

“I want the truth.”

“Fine. Then am I the sexiest man you’ve ever met in your life?”

“I’m not going to answer that,” she says cheekily.

“I see how it is.”

“What? You can’t have it both ways, Brett.”

“I know. And maybe I don’t want it both ways. Maybe I want you.”

“And maybe I want you too.” She smiles at me. “So, we’re going to do this? Friends with benefits?”

“Friends with all the benefits. Works for me.” I chuckle.

Her phone starts ringing, and she looks at the screen in surprise. “It’s Marcus.”

“Oh,” I grunt. I’m not thrilled to hear his name.

“I won’t answer. I’ll call him back later.”

“No, answer.”

Not because I want her to talk to him, but if she’s going to talk to him, I want to hear what the conversation is about.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay.” She answers. “Hi, this is Rosie,” she says like she doesn’t know who is calling.

I can’t hear what he says, but she giggles.

“Oh, it’s good to hear your voice too.”

I glare at her, but she isn’t looking at me.

“I’m not in town right now, no. Yeah, I’m on my way back now. When? I’m not sure of my schedule this week, but I can check. Wednesday or Thursday? Wow. I can see if I can make it work.” She laughs. “Oh, you’re too kind. I mean, yeah.”

My fists grip the steering wheel.

Is this jackass asking her out? Is she saying yes to a date while she’s sitting in the car with me, after we just decided to be friends with benefits?

It takes everything in me not to mutter something out loud.

“Okay, I’ll let you know. I’ll call you tomorrow, if that’s okay. Perfect.” She hangs up and looks over at me.

“So, what was that about?” I ask.

“Why does your face look like that? What’s going on, Brett?”

“Nothing,” I say in a clipped tone. “What? Did you accept a date with him or something? I suppose the bet is still on, huh?”

“The bet?” She wrinkles her nose. “Wait, what?”
