I lie back against the pillows, look up at the ceiling, and picture her face. Even though she says she’s not a morning person, she always wakes up with a smile, and it’s one of the things I admire about her.
I grab my phone and scroll through Pinterest for photos or articles I can send her. When I see one titled “Five Signs He’s the One,” I copy the link and text it to her. My phone beeps right away, and I read her reply eagerly.
I’m writing you a dating app profile right now. Want to see it?
Very funny, Rosie.
I’m not joking.
What does it say?
Grumpy single ex-SEAL. Good in bed, but not looking for commitment.
Sounds about right, I text back.
I call her, and she picks up almost immediately.
“Hey. What are you doing?”
“I was texting you. Why are you calling me?”
“I figured it was easier to talk than to text.”
“I suppose you’re right. I should get out of bed and shower now anyway,” she says, yawning. “Had a late night.”
“Doing what?” I hope I don’t sound nosy, but part of me wonders if she went on a date.
“Oh, me and Izzy watched 10 Things I Hate About You. We were chilling out and eating popcorn.”
“Sounds fun.”
“Yeah, I suppose. I hope I’m not too tired for work though.”
“You’ll be fine. Just drink a lot of coffee.”
“Yeah, I’ll try. So, what are you doing today?”
“I’m meeting with an attorney about the first steps for setting up a 501(c)(3).”
“Oh wow. So, you think you’ll get the money?”
“I sure hope so. I want to make this a reality, and once the trust comes through, I want to hit the ground running and make an offer on the building I showed you.”
“Oh, that would be awesome. Good luck.”
“Yeah, I’m going to need it.”
“And if you don’t get the money from your granddad, I’m sure we can figure out other ways to crowdfund and raise it.”
I’m surprisingly touched by her words. “Thanks. That’s really nice of you to say.”
“You’re welcome. Anyway, I need to shower now. Talk later?”
“Sounds good.”
We hang up, and I stare at the screen, still taken aback by her offer to help me raise the money. Rosie comes from nothing, and yet she’s one of the most generous women I’ve ever met.
Stop obsessing over her, Brett, I mutter to myself as I get out of bed. Go for a run.
