“You and he need to what?” Rosie steps in front of me.

“Who are you?”

“I’m the woman he chooses to spend his nights with. You’re the woman he never called back,” Rosie says. “Why are you talking to my man like that?”

“Excuse me? He’s nothing to you. Brett, are you going to let her talk to me like that?” Simone gives me a look, and all I can do is shake my head and laugh.

“Sorry. This is my girl.” I put my arm around Rosie’s waist and pull her into me. “We’re together now.” I kiss her on the cheek. “And if my girl doesn’t want me talking to you, then I guess I’m not going to.”

“Fine. I just wanted to know if you still had my black thong.” Simone looks me up and down, and I know she’s trying to get a reaction from me. “If you want trash, you can have trash.” She rolls her eyes and walks back out of the restaurant.

“What was that about?” Rosie says, glancing at me. “Why was she asking about her thong?” Her eyes flash uncertainly.

“I have no idea. The only panties I want are yours,” I say, touching her lips softly. “But I kind of like seeing you jealous.”

“I was not jealous.”

“You were totally jealous, Rosie.”

“Whatever, Brett.”

“What? I’m just calling it like I see it. I don’t mind. You know that, right?”

“Whatever,” she says. “I need to get back to work.”

“Sounds good. I’m going to get you that ring. Hopefully, I’ll have it in the next couple of days. And I’ll pick you up tonight for dinner.”

“Sure, but I do have to write tonight. I need to work on my comedy set.”

“Perfect. You work on your comedy set, I’ll tell you what I think, and then we make sweet, sweet love.”

“Really, Brett?”

“What?” I grin at her. “I can be honest about how I feel, right?”

“So, you just want me for my body?”

“No, that’s not true. I want you for your body and your mind.”

“And to help you get your trust.”

“Well, that’s a given,” I say, laughing.

Deep down, I know I’d still want her even if the trust wasn’t part of the deal. But there’s no way I’m telling her that. Maybe because I don’t understand what it means, and everything between us is already so complicated. I don’t need to make it even more so.

Chapter Nineteen

ROSIE

“Oh, Brett, you really didn’t have to make dinner for me.” I look up from the dining table and watch him peel potatoes. “I honestly could have made a sandwich, and we could have done this another night.”

“No, I’m more than happy to cook for you.” He smiles. “And I can’t wait to hear your jokes.”

“They’re not going to be that great, and I don’t want you to feel like you have to listen to me. I feel so bad. You could have gone out. You could have had fun.”

“I wanted to spend the evening with you.”

“But I know you were hoping it was going to be dinner and sex, and—”
