“Don’t quit the day job, Brett,” she says, giggling as she kisses my chest. “I think only one of us is made for the stage.”
“Yeah, I think only one of us is beautiful enough to wow the crowds.”
She looks up at me in surprise.
“You know you’re absolutely gorgeous, right?”
“It doesn’t hurt to hear it from you,” she says.
I press my lips against hers and kiss her long and hard, loving the feel of her next to me. “You’re one of the most beautiful women in the world, Rosie.”
“Okay, fine,” she says. “We can have sex one more time, but then we really have to sleep. I’ve got a long week.”
* * *
It’s been three days since I’ve seen Rosie, and I haven’t heard from her. I wonder how she’s doing. I wonder if she’s finished writing her set. I know the show is tonight, but I don’t want to add any pressure, even though I’d love to wish her good luck. So, instead of calling her, I call Dalton to see how she’s doing.
“Hey, what’s going on?” he asks as he answers.
“Not much. Calling to see how you and Sage are doing.”
“We’re fine, thanks. Why?”
“Just wondering. I know Rosie’s doing her audition soon, right?”
“Yeah, I think she’s at the Comedy Cabin tonight. We’re all going. Will you be there?”
“I’m not sure I’m going to go. I don’t want her to have any extra nerves or anything, you know?”
“I’m sure she’d love it if you came.”
“Yeah. I was checking to make sure she’s doing okay.”
“I think she’s doing fine.” He pauses. “Have you not spoken to her?”
“We saw each other a few nights ago. She’s working on her set, and I figured I should let her concentrate. I didn’t want to put all my drama on her plate, you know? I know this is really important to her.”
“Yeah, sure, that makes sense. How’s it going with your grandfather? Sage was telling me you guys are pretending to be in a relationship or getting married or something so you can get the trust.”
“Yeah. Rosie’s been great. I’ve been meaning to tell you more about it, but you’ve been busy, and I’ve been busy.”
“It’s just an act, right? You’re not catching feelings for her or anything?”
“No. Why would you say that?”
“I was interested in knowing if this was something real or not.”
“I know Sage has been worried that we’ve been spending a lot of time together.”
“She was at first. But she says Rosie seems really happy, and as long as Rosie’s happy, she doesn’t feel bad about it. Anyway, you should definitely come tonight. I think the show’s going to be great. We’re all going to be there, and I know Rosie would love your support. Plus, as her fake boyfriend, shouldn’t you be there?”
“Yeah, I’ll see. I’ve got some stuff on, but I’ll try to make it.”
“Okay. Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?”
“No. I was checking that everything’s okay.”
“I’m fine, but I have to go.”
