“Please pull over so we can talk.”

She pulled into the abandoned K-Mart parking lot and threw the Jeep in park. “Okay. Talk.”

Damn, she put my ass right on the spot. “Okay.” Pulling in a slow breath, I slowly let it out. Fuck me. I had at least a bruised rib for sure.

“Honey,” she prompted.

Right. Quit beating around the bush. “I killed him.”

Her brows shot up. “You killed him.”

It wasn’t a question, but I nodded.

She stared at me for a long moment, then turned her head to stare out the window into the darkness.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Okay. Not exactly what I was expecting, but she wasn’t screaming, so there was that.

“Did they deserve it?” she finally asked.

Fuck yes, that cocksucker deserved it.

Donnie might have been a cop, but he wasn’t a good man. He used his authority to manipulate people into doing things they hadn’t wanted to do. Especially helpless women, and that’s what got him killed.

“Does that matter?”

She turned back to face me, her head bobbing up and down. “Yes. It does.”

Was it really going to be that fucking easy with this woman?

“Yes, baby. He was a bad man. He deserved it.”

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Yeah. That’s all I need to know. I trust you, Jax.”

And with that, she threw the Jeep in drive and tromped on the gas.

Fuck me.

She was serious.

Grabbing her hand off the console, I threaded my fingers through hers and held on tight.

“I love you, Joy.”

I did. It was quick, but it was true, and I was never letting it go.

“I love you, too.”

She loved me too.

Feeling more at peace than I had in over a decade, I closed my good eye and let my head fall back against the seat.

Because fuck me, did my ribs hurt.
