I took in the breathtaking, fully renovated bedroom once more.

What the hell was I supposed to say to him?

No?

Was I going to make a five-year-old put all the mysterious toys back inside the mysterious boxes until the mysterious person who bought them came back to claim them?

I released a heavy, defeated breath. “Yes, baby. Just be careful with everything.”

His entire face lit up with radiant joy. “Thank you, Mommy!”

Kaidence immediately went right back to tearing into the plastic packaging.

Willow leaned in closer to my ear. “Girl, that boy ain’t concerned about shit. He got a whole room makeover in less than an hour, and all he wanna know is if he can keep Spider-Man.”

I shook my head slowly while taking everything in one more time.

A cold, electric chill traveled along my arms and settled in my chest, because I knew with absolute certainty who Kaidence had talked to about wanting those exact things: me.

And apparently, somebody else in this house had been listening to every single word.

Later that afternoon, I sat at the kitchen island with a glass of wine because after the morning I'd had, I felt like I had earned one.

Really, though?

I needed something stronger.

Granny had retreated to her room to rest, and my sweet baby boy was still upstairs enjoying every single inch of his mysteriously renovated bedroom, completely unbothered by the fact that none of us had the slightest clue how any of it had gotten there. Meanwhile, Willow was upstairs yelling on the phone to one of her friends about some man.

“I’m not worried about no man taking care of me!” she shouted from somewhere above me. “Nine more days, I’ll probably be rich anyway!”

I closed my eyes and took a long sip of wine.

That girl had fully convinced herself my mysterious money came with a nine-day waiting period before it somehow became a family asset.

Since I had the luxury of temporary privacy, I decided to call Henrietta and ask if she knew anything about the mysterious money.

She answered on the third ring, her warm, familiar voice coming through the speaker.

“Hey, sweetie.”

“Hey. You got a minute?”

“Of course. Everything all right with the house?”

“Yeah. I just wanted to ask you something.”

“Okay.”

I hesitated because how the hell do you ask someone if they sent you ninety million dollars without sounding like you’ve completely lost your mind or, worse, like you’re hoping they say yes?

“Did you by chance happen to send me ninety million dollars?”

Absolute dead silence filled the line for five straight seconds.

Then, “Did I do what?”

I closed my eyes tightly. “Did you send me or know anything about ninety million dollars being deposited into my account today.”
