She gave me a look like I had personally offended her. “Your black Italian leather one. The one with the gold hardware.”

I just watched her.

“The one you said I could borrow for my date.”

“Our grandmother is in a hospital room after breathing in smoke, and you’re worried about a purse that isn’t even yours?”

“No, my first concern was Granny. Then the house. The purse is technically third.” She lifted one finger like she was presenting a perfectly reasonable argument. “And for the record, I had already emotionally accepted temporary custody of that bag.”

I closed my eyes.

Willow touched my arm. “I am not being insensitive. I love Granny. I am very happy she is breathing. I would just also like your purse to still exist, because you already promised me I could carry it.”

Despite myself, a laugh slipped out. “You are unbelievable.”

“I’m practical. Do you know how good that bag was going to look with my outfit?”

“It is my bag.”

“I know whose name is on the receipt, Lakelyn. I’m talking about the date.”

“You are worried about a date outfit while the house is half burned up.”

“I’m trying to hold on to some sense of normalcy.”

“With my purse?”

“Exactly.”

I shook my head.

Willow sighed dramatically. “I knew I should’ve grabbed it.”

“You grabbed your phone and nothing else.”

“Because 911 felt more urgent at the time.”

“At least you had one correct priority.”

“Two, actually. I got Granny out too.”

“That was the main priority.”

“Well, obviously.” She paused, then added, “But if that bag survived, I still want to borrow it.”

I turned toward her slowly.

Willow held up both hands. “Too soon?”

“Way too soon.”

“Okay. I’ll circle back.”

I laughed again, quieter that time, so we wouldn’t wake Granny.
