No Longer Just Neighbors

by Echo James

“Good.”

Silence settles between us again, but this one feels different from the kind we share through the wall. Neither of us seems quite sure what to do with what just happened.

I pull the sheet higher and sit up, spotting my tank on the floor near the bed. As I reach for it, reality starts catching up with me.

Zander is still my neighbor. My loud, irritating, relentlessly charming neighbor with a reputation that half of Redwood Point seems to know about. And now I’ve slept with him.

I pull my tank over my head. “That can’t happen again.”

Zander pushes himself up on one elbow. “Agreed.”

We look at each other for a second, and neither of us sounds especially convincing.

“It was sex,” I say.

“Excellent sex.”

I point at him. “Don’t make this worse.”

“I’m agreeing with you.”

“You’re enjoying this way too much.”

His smile gets wider. “I enjoyed every single second.”

Heat climbs into my face, which is ridiculous considering everything we just did. I find my leggings and pull them on, trying to reclaim at least a little dignity.

“We’re neighbors. This already has enough potential to become a disaster.”

“And you hate my music.”

“I don’t hate your music.”

His eyebrows lift, and I immediately regret the admission.

“I hate the volume,” I correct.

“Important distinction.”

“And you have too many damn women showing up at your house.”

That smile comes back. “Still not jealous?”

“I’m going home.”

He looks around my bedroom. “You are home.”

I close my eyes for a second while he laughs, then point toward the shared wall. “Your side. I’m sending you back to your side before I decide to throw your amplifier into traffic.”

“Getting a little emotional now.”

I grab the nearest pillow and throw it at him. He catches it easily, looking far too pleased with himself.

“Definitely emotional.”

“Get dressed.”

Still smiling, he does.
