"Yes."
He swung down from the saddle.
Slowly.
Keeping his hands where I could see them, which was the single most insulting courtesy anyone had ever shown me and also, I hated to notice, rather considerate. And worse, dismounting put him much closer. I became aware of his scent almost immediately.
Cedar. Iron. Something clean beneath it.
Alpha.
My body recognized him before my pride could object. Heat gathered beneath my skin, and I tightened my grip on the bow. Guy's eyes flicked to my fingers, and then to my face.
Then, very briefly, lower.
His nostrils flared.
Oh, no.
I knew that look.
He’d smelled it. Not enough to announce me to the whole damned forest, perhaps, but enough for an Alpha standing twenty feet away who had already learned my scent.
Guy's expression didn't change.
Which somehow made it worse, so I lifted my chin. "Don't."
"I didn't say anything."
"Your face did."
His mouth twitched. "My face has been accused of many things this week."
"Add irritating to the list."
"Already there."
He took another step andI didn't retreat. His eyes dropped briefly to my bow.
"Are you going to shoot me?"
"Do you want me to?"
"No."
Another step. "But I'm beginning to suspect you enjoy pointing things at me."
I stared at him and the bastard looked pleased with himself.
"Careful, Sheriff."
His gaze held mine. "There it is again."
"What?"
"That warning."
He stopped just outside the easiest reach of my bow. "You say it quite a lot when I'm close to you."
