I squeezed his arm. “You need to allow me to help you and not just with the project.”

He cocked his head and I could sense he was thinking about my suggestion. “It’s entirely possible at least one member of the county is involved in the coverup and helping the development company force an end to the project. In addition, I now firmly believe I have a traitor in my employ.”

“I’m so sorry. You still don’t have any idea who that is.”

“No, and it’s eating at me. What I’m telling you is that danger is on all sides. I won’t keep anything from you, but I also have no intention of placing you in harm’s way. You are carrying my child.”

“Oh, it’s the unborn child you’re worried about.”

“Mmm… You are very bad.” He placed his finger against the bridge of my nose.

“Yes, and if you talk to me and tell me everything, we can get through this together.” I took a step away, holding out my hand. “As partners. Two heads are better than one in determining who laid claim to whatever empire my father had built and left. My guess is that the money involved in this company belongs to me and my sister.”

“I thought you wanted nothing to do with your inheritance.”

“I don’t, but that doesn’t mean the money can’t be used for something more worthwhile and lifesaving.”

There was a moment I thought he’d deny me until I noticed the sparkle in his eyes. “Where is your account being held?”

“PNC. I don’t know my bank account number, but I do have it in my office. Wait. Do I even have an office? I have copies of the statements in my apartment.”

“Are you giving me permission to look at your account?”

“I am. Although you’ll need the number. Sadly, I’m not certain I can trust the attorney that was obviously hired by my father.”

He took my hand into his. “My angel, there is much you need to learn about me. I have someone who can easily access your account much like I’ve done with your regular checking account.”

I’d forgotten all about how he’d invaded my privacy. “We’re going to need to work on our checks and balances.” I shook his hand, squeezing as I did.

“Fair enough. But right now, we need information.”

“Then you have my permission.”

His grin was more boyish. “Then I need to make a couple phone calls. One thing. We are going to develop a plan to take care of you.”

“I’m fine.”

“I read up on someone with pregnancy who has high blood pressure. If left unchecked for you it could mean preeclampsia, which means damage to your organs. For the baby, it could mean a preterm birth.”

“You got all this off the internet.”

“I did, which is why I’m thinking about hiring a full-time nurse.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

He lifted his eyebrows. “You don’t rule this house. Just until things settle down.”

“I don’t need a nurse.”

“You will do as I say.”

“You drive me insane. Fine. Now, are you going to get my laptop from my apartment. Yes? That way I can access the work on the internet and see what’s been done.”

“Only if you do as you’re told. You really want to shock your assistant that way?”

“No, I want to call her and plan on doing so later today.”

“I’ll allow it.”
