“Ah shit. What’s wrong?”
Based on the way Nee was staring at me, I had been in my head for a minute. “Nothing. We just haven’t discussed being mates. I honestly didn’t think about it.”
“Cousin, that’s their version of marriage. You need to be thinking about it.”
“Well, I am now.”
“Is that what you want? Because you know that shit is pretty much unbreakable. It’s in you, so it’s not like you can just take a ring off and toss it if you want out.”
He was already in me and I was in him. How much deeper could it get?
“You literally can’t do that with a real marriage either, hoe. There’s legalities and paperwork involved.”
“I know that but you get my point. If you’re really his, there’s no easy way of ending things. He can track your ass to the ends of the earth, and based on the way you said he’s obsessed with you, I can’t imagine he would be cool with you disappearing on him.”
“But what if I’m just as obsessed and he bails on me? I can feel him, Nee. He’s already inside me which is why sex is so crazy. The connection is too damn real. If he was with someone else, I’d probably feel that shit too, and then I’m catching a case.” I was enraged just thinking about it.
Kyron wasn’t the only one addicted…
“Cousin, you’re so fucking screwed.” She grinned, shaking her head.
“I know and it’s your fault, so if this goes left, you better be prepared to pull something from the stars to fix my broken heart and make him pay for the damage done.”
“Girl, you know I got you. Don’t forget I’m one quarter chaos witch. We will fuck his shit up. Me, you, and Toy.”
“And will,” I confirmed.
“But you need to talk to him though. Y’all got some things to figure out. I can’t have my cousin out here being slutted out for her blood with no commitments.”
“Bitch…” I said through a laugh, almost choking on my calzone.
“Say I’m lying?” she challenged and I smiled.
“Okay, you got that.”
We finished our food then I headed back to my shop. A few days a week I paid two girls from the college to work part-time hours. When I first opened, I was running myself ragged trying to manage by myself. Nee and Toyin both got on me about hiring help, even if just part-time, and it was the best decision I could have ever made. Business was good, now I needed to lock in on some decisions about my personal life.
When I pulled up to Sweet Inferno, the lot was full, so I had to park closer to the street instead of near the store. I didn’t expect Sweet Inferno to have a crowd, because on any given day, customers from the pizza place next to me were the ones who typically filled the parking lot.
Phone in hand I crossed the parking lot, swiping through notifications I missed while at lunch with Nee. So I didn’t realize anyone was near me until it was too late. Someone jerked my arms so roughly it caught me off guard and my phone went flying out of my hand. A large body loomed over me, blocking the sun, then I was shoved against a nearby car.
“You made her leave me,” he yelled, getting in my face. I blinked in confusion but didn’t get a chance to react because he gripped my arm tighter, yanked me forward, then my body was slammed against the car for a second time.
I cussed under my breath and attempted to shake away the confusion so I could focus, but he was in my face yelling again.
“Bitch, you’re gonna fix this shit.”
“I don’t know you and you better get your gotdamn hands off me.”
“I’m not doing a damn thing until you fix whatever the fuck you did. I know you’re a witch. You put some kinda spell on Leigh. You’re gonna remove it, now,” he growled, releasing my arm only to wrap his hand around my neck.
His words provided clarity. This was Micah, Leigh’s ex. He also had no business putting his hands on me, no matter how angry he was about her ending things.
Yeah, muthafucker, I got a fix for you alright. Just not the one you’re demanding.
I narrowed my eyes and my flames blazed. I pulled from them and sent heat to my neck, scorching his hand. He snatched it back, cussing from the contact. I pulled enough energy to warrant third degree burns. Touching my neck was the equivalent of placing his hand on hot coals.
“What the hell did you—”
