"Now it is."

The silence that follows is heavier than any conversation we've had. Finally, Sayer asks the question that matters.

"So..."

He swallows.

"You're my father."

Not a question. A statement. Hearing the words spoken aloud steals the air from my lungs.

15 years. 15 birthdays. First steps. First words. First day of school. Nightmares.

Scraped knees. Every single moment…

Gone.

Not because I chose to miss them. Because someone stole them from all three of us. My voice comes out rough.

"...Yes."

The word barely makes it past my throat. Sayer doesn't move. Neither do I.

"I kept wondering why being around you felt..."

He searches for the right word.

"...familiar."

I nod.

"So did I."

The screen door creaks. We both turn. Carys stands in the doorway holding two mugs of coffee. She has clearly heard enough. Her eyes are bright with unshed tears. She walks toward us slowly.

She stops beside Sayer. Then reaches for his hand. With her other hand…

She reaches for mine.

For a long moment, none of us says anything. The morning fog curls around the yard while somewhere in town church bells begin ringing nine o'clock. Halloween banners flutter across Main Street. A murder of crows erupts from the trees beyond the property, filling the gray sky with black wings. It feels strangely ceremonial.

Carys squeezes my hand.

"I think we've spent 15 years believing we failed each other."

"We didn't."

Her voice wavers.

"We were robbed."

She's right. I wasn't an absent father. She wasn't an unfit mother. Sayer wasn't abandoned. Someone orchestrated this. Someone decided our family should never exist.

That realization burns hotter than anger. It becomes purpose.

"So..."

A nervous smile appears.
