Serenity holds her stance and braces her weight against the edge of a heavy oak table to stabilize her stance as she faces the older woman. "I needed my research notes. Everything we've built, every lead we have on the coven is written in those journals."
Estella’s braided crown catches the firelight as she tilts her head, her composure shifting into something outright lethal. "Your research nearly got you killed."
Kellan sprawls across the couch in a display of exaggerated comfort, clearly enjoying the family dynamics. "This feels familiar. Do all witch families argue like this, or just the Crowes?"
Estella’s attention shifts to me, and her gaze locks onto mine, holding me motionless in an icy paralysis. "Mr. Morvane, thank you for extracting her safely."
"Just doing the job." I remain standing while analyzing exit routes and defensive positions from habit. "Your niece mentioned attackers with specific knowledge of Crowe bloodline magic."
"More than specific." Estella moves to a sideboard holding crystal decanters and pours amber liquid into heavy glasses. "They belong to the Order of the Crimson Moon—an extremist lunar coven that's been hunting our family for generations. They represent more than a sect; they've spent decades recruiting from the fringes, building an underground army that numbers in the hundreds, perhaps thousands, scattered across the Midwest."
She turns back to us, her face cast in hard shadows by the firelight. "My informants have been logging the sudden spike in kidnappings and unexplained deaths across the territories these past few weeks. It is no coincidence that the violence escalated in direct lockstep with your progress. You poked a hornet's nest, Serenity, and those victims were merely the collateral damage before they finally located your apartment."
Serenity's hands clench against the chair arms, knuckles white beneath her pale skin. The movement is subtle, but I catch the fine tremor running through her fingers.
"Lunar covens were disbanded decades ago," Serenity answers, her composure carefully controlled. "The magical community voted them too dangerous to exist."
"This one survived by going underground. They've spent years collecting bloodline samples, mapping genetic markers tied to ancient lunar rituals."
The tremor in Serenity's hands intensifies, spreading up her wrists. She places her palms flat against the leather while trying to hide the reaction.
"What do they want with bloodline magic?" Kellan asks.
"Power beyond comprehension. This magic draws directly from celestial forces—moon phases and stellar alignments, as well as cosmic cycles. In the right hands, it can reshape reality itself."
"And in the wrong hands?"
"It can tear holes in the fabric between worlds." Neither woman blinks. The room holds its breath around them, firelight popping in the hearth like it's afraid to interrupt. Serenity's eyes flash with determination as she leans forward in her chair.
"This is exactly why I need to investigate before things spiral out of control." Sharp conviction rings through her voice, forged by years of chasing dangerous truths. "Every day we wait, they grow stronger. More people disappear. More innocents die while we sit behind fancy wards playing defense."
Estella’s aristocratic composure cracks; steel shows beneath the polished surface. "And this is precisely why you need to remain here under protection. Your reckless investigations are what drew their attention in the first place."
"My investigations exposed their operation."
"Your investigations painted a target on your back the size of Chicago."
Serenity springs to her feet and tracks to the massive windows overlooking the estate grounds. "So I should just hide? Let them complete whatever ritual they're planning while I cower in the family fortress?"
"You should survive long enough for us to find another solution."
Her revelation casts a sudden chill over the parlor, the warmth of the dying fire fading into a suffocating stillness. I watch the interplay between them, recognizing the fundamental divide between protection and action that defines most of my client relationships. Family dynamics add layers of complexity I usually avoid, but the Crowe women broadcast their conflicts in full, theatrical intensity.
"There is no other solution," Serenity says finally. "Not while they're actively hunting Crowe bloodline magic."
Estella moves to her niece and surprisingly gently rests her elegant hands on Serenity’s shoulders. "Then we prepare for war from a position of strength, utilizing the full protection of our own territory where we control every entrance and exit."
The meeting dissolves without resolution, family tensions simmering beneath polite farewells. Estella retreats to her private study, while Serenity disappears upstairs to whatever guest room has been prepared. Kellan and I establish our security protocols, dividing the estate into patrol sectors and communication checkpoints.
"This place gives me the creeps," Kellan mutters as we inspect the perimeter wards. "Too much old magic soaked into the foundations."
The protective barriers buzz with power, layers of defensive spells woven through decades of careful maintenance. They should be impenetrable to anything short of a full coven assault.
At three-seventeen in the morning, the wards scream.
The sound rips through the silence of my mind, an abrasive friction that jolts me upright, sending me springing from the chair where I’d been maintaining watch. Every protective barrier around the estate flares simultaneously, their magical resonance shifting from a consistent hum to shrieking alarm.
But the screaming stops as suddenly as it began, replaced by an unnatural silence that makes my senses agitate fiercely within me. The wards remain standing, though a dark corruption has twisted them into something that tastes wrong against my enhanced senses.
