"This is getting worse." She breathes the admission against my shirt, her face currently hidden. "My magic has always been volatile, but I used to be able to manage it. Now? I can barely channel lunar energy without it threatening to swallow me whole."
I keep my arms around her and feel the residual tremors that shake her frame. "What changed?"
"I don't know." She finally lifts her head, those eyes haunted with something more than exhaustion. "About six months ago, I started feeling this... pressure. And ever since I started actively investigating this coven, the instability has skyrocketed. Something's been waking up inside me. Like there's another person in my head, and she's furious."
The confession leaves an unguarded silence in its wake. Outside, rain continues hammering against the windows while thunder rolls across the sky.
"At the estate, when I lost control..." She swallows hard, her fingers gripping my shirt. "I could have killed everyone in that room, including my own aunt and you. The power wanted to destroy everything."
"But it didn't."
"Because you stopped me." Her laugh carries no amusement. "What happens next time when you're not there? What happens when I'm investigating a case and some innocent human gets caught in the crossfire?"
I study her face and spot genuine terror behind her tough exterior. Strip away the pride and the bravado, and the reality is stark: she is genuinely afraid of what she might become.
"You think I haven't considered that? You think I haven't run every worst-case scenario through my head since the moment I met you?"
"Then why are you still here?"
The question cuts straight to the heart of something I've been avoiding. I maintain professional distance and emotional barriers, building careful walls to avoid caring too much about the people I protect.
"Because I trust you. I shouldn't—everything I know about your kind says to keep my distance, especially when the magic starts tearing the room apart. This entire job screams danger. But when you lost control at the estate, even drowning in that much power, you fought to pull it back."
She stares at me with something close to wonder. "That's not enough."
"It's everything." I brush a strand of hair away from her face, my thumb grazing her skin just over the bone. "I've seen witches drunk on power before. They actively embrace the torrent, riding it until it consumes everything around them. You're different."
"You don't understand—"
"I understand that you're terrified of hurting people, which means you won't." My voice drops lower, steely and absolute. "The ones who become monsters never worry about becoming monsters."
I look into her eyes, refusing to let her retreat behind that wall she builds so fast. “There it is again. That fear is proof you won't let it consume you.”
Serenity’s laugh bubbles up, strangled at the edges with disbelief. “Easy for you to say. You’re not the one threatening to rip reality apart every time the moon rises.”
“We all have demons. Mine simply happens to howl at the moon with me,” I reply, a wry smile tugging at my lips.
Her lips curve and mirror my smile. “An army of hexed assassins, a corrupt coven hunting down every drop of my blood, and you’re still willing to joke?”
“Choose to laugh, and we keep winning,” I murmur, the levity softening the air around us.
As our laughter fades, a profound silence descends, heavy with raw trust and pure, unguarded vulnerability.
I've been watching this woman for days now. I watched her argue with me over cold takeout at three in the morning and fall asleep mid-sentence with a manuscript in her lap. She threw herself between danger and strangers without a second's hesitation, then refused to admit she was scared until her hands shook too hard to hide. Every hour we spend crammed into cars and cramped rooms peels back another layer, and what's underneath keeps making it harder to remember why distance matters.
Her gaze drops to my mouth before flicking back to my eyes, the silver in her irises blazing in quiet, undeniable surrender.
Instinct guides me closer, the distance shrinking one breath at a time until her body heat washes over me. Her fingers skim my jaw, featherlight, and the touch sends something electric arcing straight through my chest. My hand finds the curve of her waist, tugging her closer, bypassing every ounce of my professional restraint.
Her lips part, a soft exhale warming my mouth. I freeze, poised and locked onto the moment, like the whole world has narrowed to this single, inevitable point.
Her lips are a mere breath from mine when the air fractures. A sharp spike of magic flares unbidden—a sudden crash of energy blistering forth in every direction. The room gasps as if it's alive, and the shadows shiver, stretching unnaturally and coldly.
“Darius!” Her voice is a ragged plea, terror fracturing the air. Cool luminescence dances across the warped walls, her eyes wide, horror-struck.
I gather her against me, striving to soothe the storm inside her as best I can. “Focus on me! You've got this.”
Her power lashes invisibly, frantic and wild, testing the limits of my hold. Yet amid the chaos, her trembling fingers cling to my arm, refusing to let go.
