SERENITY
The metal chains binding my wrists snap as power floods through me, the metal disintegrating under the entity's influence. My hands are free, overtaken by a foreign, ancient grace. Watching my fingers flex reveals fingernails curving into claws and argent veins of power pulsing beneath my skin while the entity tests the boundaries of my flesh.
Finally, freedom, the voice whispers through my consciousness, layered with harmonics that make my skull ache.
Fighting for control, my body rises from the ritual circle without my permission. "You're not—I won't let you—"
My protest dissolves into a scream as power erupts from my skin in waves that crack the ancient stone. The chamber walls buckle under the assault, centuries-old masonry crumbling as the entity stretches through my magic.
Darius is right there, reaching for me, but the entity commanding my flesh sweeps an arm in his direction. Immense force slams directly into his chest and sends him skidding across the floor, his gear shredding against stone.
"Stay back," I manage to choke out during a brief moment of clarity. "I can't—it's too strong—"
The entity booms forward again, drowning my consciousness in a pearly haze and alien hunger. Through its awareness, everything in the chamber becomes apparent with terrifying clarity, from Kellan's racing heartbeat as he dodges falling debris to Lynn's spike of adrenaline as she fires crossbow bolts at fleeing cultists. The frantic panic radiating from the imprisoned paranormals chained around the ritual space fuels the atmosphere.
Delicious, the entity purrs through my thoughts. Such exquisite terror and beautiful chaos.
That's when I understand. The fear saturating this place is pure, active fuel, generated directly by the chaos of the battle. Every scream acts as fuel, while the surrounding panic and sudden outbursts of violence feed directly into the entity's power. It's been starving in its prison for centuries, and now it's gorging itself on the emotional chaos we've brought.
"You're feeding on this. The fear, the fighting—you need it."
We need it, the entity corrects, flexing my fingers until claws extend from my fingertips. As do you, little witch. Feel how strong we become together.
Power courses through me, intoxicating and overwhelming. For a moment, I almost surrender to it. The entity offers strength beyond imagination, magic that could reshape reality itself. All I have to do is let go.
Then Darius calls my name, cutting through the entity's seductive whispers.
"Rene, fight it!"
Grabbing onto his voice like a lifeline allows me to claw my way back to the surface of my own mind. Finding his amber gaze grants me a few precious seconds of being myself again.
"The fear," I gasp, my attempt at speech barely audible over the sound of collapsing stone. "It feeds on fear and violence. The more chaos, the stronger it gets."
Understanding flashes across Darius's features. Around us, the battle continues to rage as my allies fight desperately against the remaining cultists. But every moment of combat, every spill of terror from the prisoners, makes the entity stronger.
The thing in my head laughs with my voice, rich and satisfied. Clever little vessel. But knowledge changes nothing. They cannot simply stop fighting. They cannot simply stop fearing. This is what mortals do.
My back arches against my will as another wave of power tears through the chamber. Ancient support beams crack and splinter, raining debris on the fighters below. I feel the entity's satisfaction as fresh panic spikes through the room.
"Everyone needs to calm down. Stop fighting—stop being afraid—"
But even as I speak, I know it's impossible. How do you tell people to stop fearing for their lives while the ceiling caves in around them?
The realization hits me with a sickening jolt—the fighting is an inevitability. Fear is a core instinct, entirely deaf to logic. I must handle this solo and force my way forward while an ancient entity claims my body as its personal playground.
Foolish vessel, I strain to step toward Darius, but the entity purrs as it violently overrides my weight, forcing my body into a sharp sidestep in the opposite direction. You think to cage us again? We are beyond such mortal tricks now.
Retreating into the shadowed catacombs of my mind involves clawing through everything I've read in those crumbling texts. The knowledge ranges from Lachlan's theory about overloading the containment to Morwyn Crowe's ancient grimoire describing the permanent binding. Every scrap of knowledge my ancestors left behind points toward the same terrifying conclusion that the Vessel must willingly absorb the moon power back into themselves.
"Rene!" Darius lunges forward, but the entity wearing my face gestures lazily. A wall of force slams into him and sends him skidding backward across broken stone.
The entity laughs with my voice, delighted by its newfound freedom. "Oh, how the mighty wolf scrambles. Shall we make him beg?"
"Leave him alone," I snarl from within my own head, fighting for even a moment of control.
The entity raises my hand, and Darius's body lifts into the air, suspended by invisible threads of moonly power. A wild, luminescent yellow overtakes his eyes as his wolf darts to the surface, but even supernatural strength means nothing against this level of magic.
