"My mother chose love," Serenity says, her voice ringing off the crumbling stone as clear as a bell struck in silence. "And you've spent twenty-nine years terrified it would happen again."
Power builds around us to manifest as a beautifully tempered, intentional force. I feel it threading through our bond to meld her magic with my wolf's earthen strength into a force that makes the air itself vibrate. The moon tattoos on Serenity blaze with renewed light, this time burning clean and free of the entity's corruption.
Malachai senses the shift, his ritual scars flaring with agitation as the lunate ink pulses erratically while backing toward the shattered altar. The theatrical composure he has worn since I first laid eyes on him cracks wide open. I glimpse a small and desperate fanatic watching his life's work slip through his fingers.
"Resealing is impossible now," he hisses, his hands weaving frantic patterns in the air. Dark energy gathers between his scarred palms to build toward something massive. "The entity is already free and tasting the air of this world again after centuries of confinement. You think your pathetic bond can contain a force that predates civilization?"
Serenity's voice echoes through the chamber, vibrating so deeply that the remaining stone walls groan. "I can contain it."
She steps forward with precise movements and measured breaths as starlight cascades from her hands in controlled spirals that push back the darkness pooling at Malachai's feet. The woman who once feared her own power now wears it like armor, and my instincts howl at the sight of her advancing on the man who murdered her mother.
Malachai raises his hands with dark energy screaming between his fingers. "Then come, little Crowe. Let us see if the daughter dies as beautifully as the mother."
I position myself at Serenity's flank with extended claws as a savage need to protect her strains at the surface. Our bond thrums, our intentions aligned, and the single glance she gives me reveals everything in her eyes.
She is completely devoid of fear and done running.
The final confrontation begins with a clash of white-hot brilliance and shadow that shakes the foundations of the city above.

SERENITY
The first blast of dark energy screams past my ear, close enough that I feel the malevolent chill of it against my cheek. I dive left, a torrent of bright flames shearing from my palms to carve a protective barrier between us and Malachai's next assault. The magic flows clean and controlled now, no longer fighting against itself or me.
"Magnificent," Malachai breathes, even as he forges another attack between his scarred fingers. "Do you feel it, vessel? The power singing in your veins? This is only the beginning."
Darius lunges from my right flank, claws extended, but Malachai gestures sharply, and shadows coalesce into solid tendrils that slam the wolf sideways into crumbling stone. I hear Darius hit the wall with a sickening crack, and rage flares through our bond.
"You bastard!" I hurl a concentrated bolt of cosmic fire that shatters the altar behind him into smoking fragments.
Malachai laughs, dancing backward through the debris, his movements impossibly graceful. "Such fire! Your mother never wielded half this strength. The entity chose well when it marked you from birth."
I advance while weaving defensive shields as dark magic crashes around us. "The entity was merely a tool under your command. You kidnapped and murdered innocent people to manufacture this moment."
"Manufacture?" His ritual scars flicker brighter, extracting power from the chaos swirling through the chamber. "Child, you were bred for this purpose. Every Crowe witch for three centuries existed only to produce you—the perfect vessel for a god's return."
Darius recovers almost instantly, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead but his eyes blazing with lethal energy. He circles wide, forcing Malachai to divide his attention.
"She's not your weapon," Darius growls, and I catch his muscles coil, preparing to strike.
"Weapon?" Malachai's rhetoric rises, fueled by evangelical fervor. "She is so much more than that. Serenity, stop fighting what you were born to become and accept the entity's gift to transcend these mortal limitations."
Another wave of corrupted power crashes against my shields. The impact drives me to one knee, the luminous barrier flickering as I struggle to maintain the barrier. Through the bond, I feel Darius's concern spike.
"Look around you. This realm is broken. Humans and paranormals tear each other apart while ancient powers sleep beneath their feet. You could end all of it by ruling over them as the goddess you were meant to be."
"You think I want to rule over them?" I push back to my feet, letting contempt sharpen my response.
"You mean control them and drain them to act as batteries for your precious entity."
"Evolution requires sacrifice." Dark tendrils lash out, forcing me to dodge behind a fallen pillar. "The weak serve the strong. It has always been so."
Darius attacks from the blind spot, claws raking across Malachai's shoulder before the fanatic can react. Steel-dark blood spatters the stone, hissing where it lands. But instead of crying out, Malachai throws back his head and laughs.
"Yes! Feed the chaos! Every drop of violence strengthens what's coming!"
I realize with dawning horror that he's right—the entity gains power with each act of aggression, each moment of pain. The whispers at the edge of my consciousness become more insistent, promising an end to struggle if I simply stop fighting and embrace the power.
