“Let’s just get out of here and maybe go to the kitchen first for a drink. I have a feeling I’ll need it.” Hunter slapped my ass, jolting me toward the door so I’d be the first one out.
“Look who finally decided to join us!” Colton singsonged as we came into view.
“We were just going to grab a drink before we sit down.” I hiked my thumb toward the kitchen.
“Oh, please, sit. Allow the bartender to do his job.” Colton looked between me and Hunter, offering a wink before he breezed past us for the kitchen.
Having no choice, we approached the long dining room table that sat twelve and took our seats somewhere in the middle with the heat of everyone’s gaze on us.
“Wow. So, you look freshly fucked.” Peyton giggled, breaking the silence.
Cocking my head in her direction, I scoffed. “That sounds like something I would say. Where is my best friend and what did you do with her?”
“Don’t deflect. It’s not like you were trying to hide it.” Peyton reached for a lock of my hair that was out of place, correcting it.
“Okay, fine. Apparently, because we can’t mind our own business around here, I have to break down every dirty detail for you people.” Shifting my shoulders back, I cleared my throat.
“Wait a minute…” Hunter chimed in. Leaning closer to me, he whispered, “Are you really going to tell them what just went down in there?”
“Hunters got a point—” Peyton threw a finger up in the air. “Wait a minute while I get Jayson on the phone. The game ended like twenty minutes ago, so we can’t leave him out of the most epic family dinner since our very first one.” Peyton pulled out her phone, immediately FaceTiming Jayson without a second thought.
“What did I miss?” Colton chimed in as he set down fresh drinks in front of us.
“Oh, well, apparently, Peyton is calling Jayson, so we can all have a chat about what went down in the bedroom between me and Hunter because it’s absolutely everyone else’s business and not my own.”
“Is this what all family dinners are like? Because I definitely feel like I’ve been missing out, if that’s the case.” Colton sipped on his drink, pinky in the air, waiting for the drama to unfold.
Before I could even open my mouth to answer him, Hunter’s hand found my knee, squeezing it like his life depended on it.
Turning so my eyes met his, I couldn’t help but notice how pale his face was.
“You realize Peyton is calling Jayson, a player on my payroll, to include him in a conversation that doesn’t need to be had in the first place, right?” he whispered with his jaw clenched.
“Don’t worry, Hotshot, I wasn’t planning to give them every detail, if you couldn’t sense my sarcasm. They are just being dramatic.”
When Peyton’s call finally connected, Jayson answered, “Calling to congratulate me on the big win, gorgeous?” You could hear his cockiness through the phone without even looking at him.
And why did it sound like he was flirting with my roommate? Wasn’t he aware that it was Sunday night, and she was likely not alone?
“Congrats—” Peyton muttered before Spencer swiped the phone from her hand.
“We actually called because we wanted to show you who you’ve been replaced by tonight at family dinner.”
Spencer flipped the camera in our direction, causing everyone to hush around us. Doing their best to hold back their fit of giggles, Hunter and I looked right into the camera. While I waved with a sarcastic smirk, Hunter awkwardly lifted his hand, saying a quick, “What’s up, man?”
“No shit? Boss, is that you?”
“Yup.” Hunter rolled his lips together, keeping his answer short.
“Hey, Pretty Boy.” Colton filled in the space behind us. “Not sure if Hunter was your replacement, or maybe that was me. But either way, sounds like you are missed tonight.”
Peyton got up to grab the phone, turning it so she and Avery were in the frame.
“Do one of you ladies want to fill me in on why boss man is sitting in my seat?” Jayson chirped.
Avery and Peyton looked at each other, then looked back at me before speaking. “Well—” They both started to talk at the same time before breaking out in a fit of laughter.
“Jesus Christ, give me the phone.” Standing up, I rounded the table and pulled it from my friends’ pretty little hands.
