I laughed.
“Do you hear yourself?”
“What’s funny?”
“You. Standing at my job mad because I haven’t been answering you while you go home every night to my fucking sister.”
“That ain’t got shit to do with me and you.”
“It got everything to do with me and you.”
One of the dental assistants came around the corner holding a chart.
“Ave?”
I turned.
“Yeah?”
“Did Mrs. Coleman’s insurance update come through?”
“Yeah, I scanned everything this morning. It should be in there.”
She flipped the chart open.
“Oh, I see it. Thanks.”
“No problem.”
She walked off, but not before giving Xay a quick look.
I waited until she disappeared.
“See? This is what the fuck I’m talking about. We are not having this conversation here.”
Xay leaned against my desk.
“You got a break?”
“When your ass leaves.”
He sucked his teeth.
My office phone rang.
I held up one finger.
“Dr. Harris’s office, Avery speaking. How can I help you?”
Xay stood there staring at me while I scheduled a cleaning.
I turned my chair away from him.
“Okay, I have Tuesday at ten-thirty or Thursday at one… Thursday? Perfect.”
Xay tapped the back of my chair.
