“Why?”
“What you mean why?”
“I mean why the fuck was he comfortable enough in here to take his hoodie and watch off?”
Heather stared at me.
I could practically see her brain working now.
And suddenly her expression changed.
The defensiveness disappeared.
She started studying me instead.
“Hold up.”
I folded my arms.
“Hold up what?”
“How the fuck you know that’s Xay’s watch?”
Shit.
I didn’t answer.
Heather stepped from behind the island.
“And you knew that hoodie pretty damn fast too.”
“I’ve seen him wear it.”
“Nah.” She shook her head slowly. “You didn’t look at that hoodie like you seen him wear it before. Why you know his shit so fucking well, Avery?”
Silence.
Carter babbled from the living room.
Collin made one of those little newborn noises behind her.
Neither one of us moved.
I stared at my cousin.
She stared right back.
All the weird shit from Thanksgiving started moving through my head again.
Xay watching her.
Heather watching him.
That funny feeling I’d gotten when she told me Xay had been at her house before Thanksgiving.
How fast she’d switched the conversation.
How irritated Xay had gotten when I mentioned Heather before.
