My phone vibrated inside my purse.

Even on silent, I heard it against whatever shit I had thrown in there.

I already knew who it was.

Avery closed her eyes.

A couple at the next table looked over.

I lowered my voice.

Neither answered.

Now I wasn’t playing anymore.

I looked at Avery.

She looked at Heather.

Heather looked back at her.

They were having an entire fucking conversation with their eyes.

“Hello?!”

Heather rubbed her palms over her thighs.

“Why you keep calling me Sam like you about to tell me I got cancer?”

“Did somebody die?”
