But I wasn’t about to insult her by pretending.

She nodded.

“Okay.”

“Sam—”

“No, I understand now.”

“You don’t.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She shifted her bag higher onto her shoulder.

“My husband made a fool out of me, and while I was sitting there trying to figure out why I wasn’t enough for him, his brother saw me hurting and thought, you know what? Perfect fucking opportunity.”

“That ain’t what happened.”

“That’s exactly what you just told me!”

“In the beginning.”

“Oh, here we fucking go.”

“No. You’re gonna hear this part too.”

“I don’t have to hear shit.”

“Then why’d you come here?”

That stopped her.

I stepped outside and pulled the door shut behind me.

“You could’ve blocked my number. Could’ve stayed home. Could’ve told me to go fuck myself over the phone. You drove all the way here because you wanted the truth.”

“I drove here because I wanted you to look me in my fucking face when you told me.”

“Then I’m looking at you.”

She folded her arms.

“Talk.”

“I wanted revenge.”

She swallowed.

“I wanted him to feel what it was like to have something taken from him.”
