Oh, what the fuck did Xay do now?
I sat straighter.
The officer walked toward our table.
“Mrs. Lawless?”
“Yes?”
“There are two detectives here asking to speak with you.”
My lawyer frowned.
“Regarding?”
“They didn’t say.”
I closed my eyes for half a second.
This motherfucker got arrested.
Had to be.
Maybe that’s why he wasn’t here.
Because what other fucking reason would detectives be walking into family court looking for me on the exact morning my husband was supposed to be sitting ten feet away?
My attorney stood with me.
“I’ll come.”
We stepped into the hallway.
The two detectives were waiting.
The man stepped forward.
“Mrs. Samantha Lawless?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Detective Jones. This is Detective Clean.”
“What happened?”
“Mrs. Lawless,” Detective Jones said carefully, “is there somewhere we can sit down?”
My heart started beating harder.
“Why? Just tell me.”
He took a breath.
“Your husband was found deceased early this morning.”
Everything around me went quiet.
