“Congratulations!”

“Don’t congratulate us yet. There is still a bunch more to lug up here,” I said. And also things to donate back to the thrift stores.

“I was talking about the baby.”

“The what?” Had she just said baby? I’d been eating well, but not enough to look like I was pregnant.

“Your baby.” She looked to Radley and then tacked on an, “Oops. You didn’t know, did you?”

I looked at my mate.

He looked at me.

“Know what?” I asked.

“Surprise?” Her cheeks were bright red.

My mate was smiling.

“Am I the only one who doesn’t know what you’re talking about?”

“You’re pregnant, dear,” she whispered, which was weird considering the exuberance she’d had in the rest of this conversation. “I can scent it.”

I looked down at my stomach.

There wasn’t anything to see. I felt fine. How could I be pregnant? I mean, I knew how, but… shouldn’t I be the first to know?

“Are you sure?” Radley asked.

“Quite sure.” She gave Radley a little pat. “Looks like you have somethings to talk about. See you round.” And off she went.

“Can you scent it, too?”

He leaned in and scented me deeply.

“My dragon says you’re carrying an egg.”

“An egg?” No one had mentioned anything about eggs before.

“At least one.”

“We’re having a baby?” I asked again. “And it’s going to be in an egg.”

“Yes and yes. We’re having a baby. Please tell me you are as happy as I am.”

“I am, but also… I have a question. How exactly does a human lay a dragon egg?”

RADLEY

I eyed the pile of cushions and blankets in the corner that I’d put there when we moved in and let my dragon call it a nest for our future mate.

It was a pretense, but to make my beast feel better, I used to sit in it and let him imagine a future. Back then, I knew I’d never have a mate. A nest was for a mated dragon with a clutch, something that was out of reach for me.

But now it was real, and the nest had to be worthy of my pregnant omega mate.

Sheridan had moved his things into my place after I’d finally marked him. I’d given him the gift, and he’d assumed it was an engagement ring. And after the confusion and misunderstandings, I’d finally given him a matching bite.
